HarperCollins & Amazon reach deal

There's not going to be a protracted dispute between Amazon and HarperCollins, as there was between Amazon and Hachette back in 2014.

Quote:
Amazon.com Inc. and HarperCollins Publishers have reached agreement on a new multiyear publishing pact that covers both print and digital titles, HarperCollins said.

An agreement between HarperCollins and Amazon puts an end to speculation the companies were nearing a showdown that would disrupt the sale of HarperCollins titles.

The agreement calls for HarperCollins to set the retail prices of its digital books, with incentives for HarperCollins to provide lower prices to consumers, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The deal’s specific financial terms weren’t available. The new agreement is expected to go into effect this week.

Sounds like a similar deal to the one other publishers signed.

And yes, I know there's no way to know the specifics. I'm just going by the common wording: "Set their own prices with incentives to keep prices low for consumers." I call it the "Agency but..." contract. Love to see some specifics on the incentives some day!

Actually, the negotiations appear to be have been just as protracted as with Hachette.
(Maybe longer since Hachette wasn't actually negotiating until S&S signed *their* deal.)
Reports are they've been haggling since at least september, maybe earlier...

The key difference is the HC negotiations were done quietly and professionally (until very recently) with no public whining, full page ads, or leaks to biased reporters. No public campaigns by country club millionaire authors or press releases about going to Amazon's board or the feds. Just two billion dollar businesses negotiating a deal for retail products.

Kinda like razors or toasters...
