First British winter olympic gold for 30 years!
Congrats to Amy Williams for winning the first British winter Olympic individual gold medal for 30 years for the "skeleton luge". Considering the there are no luge tracks in the UK, and that all she can do in this country is practice her starts on a concrete track, she's done remarkably well.

Yeah grats to the Brits for Winter Olympic Gold. But she wasn't as entertaining as Eddie the Eagle.

People like to make fun of Mr. Edwards, but it's as well to bear in mind that he was the British number 1 ski jumper, and the national record holder by a huge margin. In fact, I believe that he still does hold the British record! Britain is just not a natural "breeding ground" for winter sports, given that we get (most years) very little snow. That's why it's so unusual when someone on the British team does win a medal, compared with some other sports (like, say, cycling or rowing) where the British team always does well.

Sorry, I didn't try to make fun of him. I'd be scared shitless just being on top of the ski jump platform. Unfortunately he just wasn't up to the standards of the rest of the jumpers. And although he did gave his best, he fell well short. He was, afterall in the spirit of the Olympics. Compete, trying your best.
But he was entertaining. And like so many others here I was with him on his jumps, willing him on just that little bit further. |

No, we have a thread asking which country will win the most golds. That was not the subject of my post, so I (obviously) did not post in that thread.
Unless, that is, there's another thread I've overlooked? |
