Mirasol Kindle...nifty rumor

I'm not a huge fan of the current iterations of the Kindle, but it was speculated by Engadget and apparently on the floor at CES that the next generation of Kindle could wield a Mirasol dsplay.

Sounds pretty nice. I'm just as hopeful for Liquavista, but Mirasol is cool stuff, no doubt. Those are the two technologies I'm really eager to see more of.

That's one I've not come across. What "sort" of technology is it? Colour? Good battery life?

Yep it's color e-paper, it's bistable when not running video rates, and has better battery life than LCD and EPD when running video. There are some conflicting numbers out there on IMOD power consumption while running video, but it seems to be one of the better options.

LiquavistaColor may be even better in terms of power usage while running video, but both are better than LCD in those circumstances, and both are effectively bistable when not displaying moving content.

I knew the (true) kindle 3 would eventually have details like this.

Well, I would be interested in colored screen, but how easy are they on the eyes ?
They mentioned that Mirasol used no backlighting, no backlighting means no strains to the eyes ! That would make this interesting. But then, we would need information on Battery life. I do not think this would last 2 weeks with one charge :-)

Anyway, if amazon comes up with the first colored ebook (unless they get beaten to the punch by bebook), they might go through 2010 more serenely (it looks to me that the DX might have some really tough competition with Skiff and QUE, not mentioning outsiders like samsung, and competition is already fierce on the 6" market and it will only increase).

It is bistable. You will not get 2 weeks of video, but you can use it the same way you use a normal EPD display and likely get the same 2 weeks of book reading.

So, there's a rumor that Amazon is going to use a screen tech that's barely out of the prototype stage. *yawn* Wake me in 2011 when the devices start to ship. Maybe.

BTW, it could just be the photography, but the color in the Engadget images looks really washed out.

It's the crappy incandescent lighting they're using and the bad white-balancing of their photos (mostly).

Wow, thanks! I can see cancelling all my magazine subscriptions once this is up and running. It seems magazines just sit on my bedside table while I read books on my Kindle anyway.

I am amazed at the differences between the K1 and the K2. This should be fantastic.

If there is someone big under Qualcomm/Mirasol, I more suspect Apple than Amazon, if Apple really want to do an eBook device
