OK to use a recent edition for proofing?
Is it ok to use a recent edition to help proof read a public domain text?
For a lot of old texts, it's easy to aquire a modern pbook edition to use as a proof-reading check. But, is there a risk you end up copying a modern editor's work - which is under copyright (presumably )? From a legal pov, are we supposed to use an out-of-copyright hardcopy for proofing an e-version? |

It's fine to proof against a modern edition - that's precisely what I do. As long as you avoid modern editions "additions" to the original text - footnotes, introductions, etc - there's no issue.

Finding scans of older editions might be easier than you think:

Yes, "archive.org" is where I look too. There are some quite surprising omissions, though; eg I was surprised to find that they don't have editions of many of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books which are public domain in the US.
