RTF, EPUB & LRF

I did a re-conversion of Ed Howdershelt's "An Encounter in Atlanta" using his RTF as the source & thought that some people might be interested in seeing the differences, on the Sony, at least.

The conversions were done via Calibre, and the only change from the default settings was to enable the "Remove blanks lines between paragraphs" setting for the EPUB to match the default behaviour of the LRF generation.

Files are RTF, EPUB1, EPUB2, LRF1, LRF2

Notes:
  1. They're all shown using the 'Small' font size of the Sony viewer.
  2. The RTF needs viewing in size 'L' to being it close to the others 'S' sizes
  3. The "Remove blanks" also removes the blank between the title & the leading line
  4. The two big EPUB/LRF differences can be easily seen - specifically the right-justification and the italics

What is the difference between LRF 1 and LRF 2 and EPUB 1 and EPUB 2?

Comparing EPUB2 & LRF2, take a look at the end of the italics section, where the LRF looks as there's an extra space in there, despite it being the same text.

Not sure if you mean the question in terms of:
  • The one pair shows images of the LRF output & the other of the EPUB output, or
  • The numbers show the page numbers, where the 1s show the page 1s and the 2s show the page 2s. Page 1s show the book 'start' formatting and page 2 shows italics, or
  • Justified both sides vs Left justified & 'pseudo' italics vs 'real' italics

Do you mean epub2 has real italics?

Even f is the same in both instances instead of looking like: f

I just wasn't sure if Epub 1 and Epub 2 were two seperate conversions or the same conversion of the same amount of text from the RTF?

Don't know if it's just what fonts are available on the Sony, but neither the ePub nor the LRF have italics, both just have a slanted roman.

But even if it is just slanted (which I'm not sure of), the italics from the epub renderer look much better than the italics for lrf.

Are you sure about that? I checked a few books with italics after I integrated my fonts and the italics looked much better than your average "slanted font". Maybe it's just the default fonts on the Reader that don't have italics?

See attached image: Didn't recognize the font on the first PDF, the second was Times New Roman (or one of the many pirates around). Attached is a quick image showing two sets of fonts, top is Times New Roman, second is Cambria. Each set shows roman, slanted, and italics for comparison.

I will verify in the evening, but offhand I would say I really saw italics and not slant in my book.

Interesting...

The font in the images of the LRF pages is the stock LRF font, i.e. "Dutch801 Rm BT Roman" & while I'm not sure of the details of the Calibre ePub creation, I'd expect that it's also using a default font on the reader rather than bundling one. Maybe you only get a real italic if you override the CSS & bundle your own font?
