What are the restrictions that keep developers from making a universal eBook converter? I think it'd be a great boon for consumers as well as eBook sellers as everyone could buy any book from any store for use with any eBook reader (hardware/software) and just convert it from one format to another as needed.
I'm sure there are several legal reasons and restrictions that would prevent this. It's too good of an idea for me to be the first to think of it. POL9A |

It is kind of obvious what is holding back the developers. You see, take for example the microsoft LIT format. Quite popular because it is about standard on all pocket pc's. Unfortunately, microsoft has no wish that the books in their format can be read on palm's or who knows what like linux. Their reader is also on windows and those are the only two platforms they want. They don't -want- to have any competition. The same applies to all larger book formats.
