Machen, Arthur: Hieroglyphics, LIT v.1, 26 January 2009.
Arthur Machen (1863–1947)
Hieroglyphics (1923) A study of ecstasy in literature. Machen argues that fine literature has an ecstatic quality not present in other books, however interesting they may be. Dickens’s Pickwick Papers, Rabelais and Cervantes’s Don Quixote have this quality. Voltaire, Jane Austen and Thackeray do not.
