Overdrive will Stop Supplying Fictionwise on 30 January 2009
This "heads-up" warning came through on the Fictionwise Group this morning:
"With effect from 30 Jan 2009, Overdrive is ceasing to serve files to Fictionwise customers." There is an faq at http://www.fictionwise.com/help/Over...cement-FAQ.htm DRM strikes again! Snowman |

I'm going to write directly to Overdrive expressing my disappointment with their decision to cut Fictionwise off. I'd recommend other customers of Fictionwise do likewise.

And, as usual, a thoughtful and well-written response from Fictionwise to its customers.
If only other companies could be as expressive of their concern for their customers, Fictionwise would have more competition, and the ebook industry would continue at a healthy pace. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Fictionwise. Don |

I'd already switched to eReader wherever possible - this just makes me glad I only have about half a dozen secure mobi books on FW and about the same in .Lit.

Thanks for the heads-up! I have purchased hundreds of books from Fictionwise. I followed their instructions, but don't seem to have any books that were delivered via the Overdriver server. Seems like I dodged a bullet on that one, but what's next? If Apple can drop the DRM, why can't the publishing companies!?!

I didn't have the option either: but Steve Pendergast commented on Technorati that they would have the new books in place by around 1PM Eastern today so I'm waiting until then.

Wow... None of the over 300 books I"ve purchased at FW are Overdrive ones. That's lucky. (Or because I prefer the ereader format...)

Well they do mention that only 4% of all books sold are affected.
Still, a great example of one of the many reasons why DRM blows. |

I'm just hoping that the eReader will be made available for Kindle...

Well, it's quite a few for me...83 of 221. I guess this explains why the newest HarperCollins releases haven't been available at Fictionwise. A good chunk of the books I buy each month are published by HarperCollins, and I wondered about what was going on when FW didn't have Meg Cabot's last Princess Diaries book available when it was released this week.
So it looks like I might not be doing much business with FW in the future, which makes me sad because they were my favorite ebook seller. I liked the Micropay and the deals which would pop up from time to time, but if they can't provide the books I want to read in the format which is easiest for me to use, then my dollars will be going to BoB. |
