I knew he was having health issues that last few years but still very sad to hear the news that he had passed.

He was very upfront about his problems, but never once did you hear him complaining. One of my top favorite authors. I liked the realism his books projected and how he never glorified war.

I misread the thread title initially as "RIP David Duke" and was both confused and concerned.
I'm not familiar with Drake's oeuvre, but I have to laud his ingenuity for coming up with a series title like "Hammer's Slammers". |

I knew he was sick and thought I remembered he was not really writing anymore as a result. I really enjoyed a lot of his books, and read most of them, even after I generally bounced off Baen. Very sad to see him go.

On the official David Drake page, his family members have a tribute plus a link to give to a charity (a scholarship fund) that David Drake supported.
Baen is offering a David Drake eBook sale as a tribute. You can get one dollar off individual eBooks -- or get the whole bundle for $87.87. The bundle can be viewed at the David Drake Collection page. I know this isn't a huge discount -- but keep it in mind if you're looking to support his family, buy eBooks you missed, etc. |

It's an odd selection of titles. From what I could tell, some of them were included because the first page mentioned his influence and included comparisons. For example, "If you like The Spark by David Drake you should also try The Godstalker Chronicles by P.C. Hodgell."
If you want to try some of David Drake's stories, I think the Hammers Slammers Baen CD is still available at the Fifth Imperium. But you have to download the entire ISO or CD file (here) and not the individual files. |

I have and have read all of David Drake's books. He was one of my favorite Military Sci Fi authors. I liked that he did not glorify war. I have been listening to some of them since he died.

A David Drake book was guaranteed to be entertaining, and often thoughtful - like taking a tourist trip to other times and places, and getting a peek at the machine works.
I'd have liked to have more of his Roman tales, as in Vettius and his Friends. |
