Baring-Gould, Sabine: Bladys of the Stewponey (illus). v1. 15 Dec 2021
By Sabine Baring-Gould (1834–1924)
Illustrations By: F. H. Townsend (1868–1920) Bernard Munns (1869–1942) A historical romance, set at the time when the roads were infested with highwaymen. Bladys of the Stewponey is based on the story of the last woman burned at the stake for treason. Her crime: killing her own husband. Although the story is fictionalized, the surroundings are real, and the Stewponey Inn existed until 2002. The tale comes alive at the hands of Sabine Baring-Gould, showing an accurate portrayal of the mistreatment and brutal punishment set aside for women in the 18th century. Historically interesting concerning crime and punishment, the story contains several twists that will entertain even today’s reader. (— adapted from publisher’s blurb) ============ The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (28 January 1834 – 2 January 1924) was an Anglican priest, antiquarian and folklorist, novelist, and eclectic scholar. One of the most prolific and popular writers of the late-Victorian period, he wrote more than 150 books and contributed countless magazine articles. His folkloric studies resulted in The Book of Were-Wolves (1865), one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy; followed by numerous volumes on other arcane subjects. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being “Onward, Christian Soldiers.” ============ This novel was first published in 1897. Cover illustration from painting by Elisabeth Baumann (1810–1881).
