Do yourselves a huge favor and forget about Battlefield Earth. It's an awful book. Princess Bride and The Man in the High castle are well worth reading.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means

I wouldn't completely dismiss it if you can read it for free. It has some interesting ideas in there, it just needed more editing to improve it, which of course didn't happen. It's not as bad as the Mission Earth series, and for example, it's light years better than the sequels to Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous With Rama written by Gentry Lee.

Buying it though? Hell no, hard pass.

The Princess Bride is one of the rare ones where both the book and the movie were excellent. The book has a few more details than the movie did, but nothing of any great importance IMHO.

The Princess Bride is a class in both book and movie form. It is an excellent movie adaptation. I don't feel like I'm missing anything with the movie.

The movie is available to stream. I'm thinking of watching it again.

The problem is that Battlefield Earth is way too long and will take way too long to slog through it. The not so awful bits are scattered far and wide in the book. IMHO, it's a waste of time to rad when there are so many other much better books available to read. I did read this and it was one of the biggest wastes of time.

I disagree slightly about Rendezvous with Rama and the sequels. I would put the first book in with the sequels because it was flat, dull, and nothing really happened. It was a good premise that wasn't executed all that well.

I think even you'll admit that it wasn't hideously depressing like the sequels were, though. Mankind had colonized the whole solar system, then all that went away and Rome got nuked between the original and Lee's first sequel. Then it got worse from there.

The one thing I wish the movie had included from the book was the rescue of Wesley from the Pit of Despair - that would have looked amazing on screen
