The 2021 Annual Reading Challenge List Thread
2021 Reading Challenge List Thread Welcome to our 12th Annual Reading Challenge! The Annual Reading Challenge is neither a race, contest, nor an “exclusive club”, anyone can join! This is just a fun activity that some of us have enjoyed doing in the past. Many of us have found reading challenges to be an entertaining way to set goals for ourselves, get ideas for books, and see what others are reading. This thread is for you to keep a running tally for your chosen challenge. Please state your goals at the top of your post (in the title line if you can), and then start your list in the body of your post. As you read books, edit your post to update your list of books read, or other challenge status. Please Remember: No discussion posts in this thread. Please use the other thread for that. Non-List posts will be deleted or moved to the other thread. Discussions & Ideas can be found here: Post #2 of this thread is dedicated to a Table of Contents for all participants in this thread. Names will be added to this TOC in alphabetical order with a link to that individual’s post number from this thread. Previous threads were for 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010 Last edited by pdurrant; 12-21-2020 at 11:46 AM. |

120 Books, Dark & Middle Ages
I’m going to limit my objectives for 2021 in hopes that the fewer, the likelier I’ll achieve them. The past few years have been characterized by mostly fails other than total books read.
I will set my usual benchmark, not a goal, of 120 books read. I’ll read a non-fiction book a month about the Dark Ages or the Middle Ages. This one’s something of a stretch, but I’d like to read a play a week, rounding to 50 over the course of the year. I reserve the right to end it early with honor if I hit the wall at the half year mark, or cut it back to two per month. Because that’s a lot of plays. ^^I’m abandoning this; it didn’t happen. I’d like to make some inroads into my GR WTR, let’s say six books, which is 20% of the current number. I’m keeping it low because the reality is that most of those titles have languished for years and while I want to read them, it seems evident I don’t want to read them, not enough. As always I link to Goodreads because I’m lazy. I won’t bother to create a link to my WTR, as my success will be measured by absence. And that’s it, although I reserve the right to tweak, especially if I start off the year falling into an unforeseen topic. Last edited by issybird; 03-11-2021 at 09:21 AM. |

Goal: Read 12,000 Pages in 2021. Completed 12/5/2021
My original goal for 2021 was to read 6,000 pages; a considerable reduction from my previous years with the exception of 2020. This was based on how little I got done on 2020. Surprisingly, I was able to complete 6,000 by May 8th, which was already a third more than I read from the mid-March through December last year, so I increased the goal to 12,000 pages and completed it in early December.
Page Goal: Read 12,000 pages in 2021 Completed on 12/5/2021 Status as of December 31, 2021: 15,471 pages read, 74 books / short stories completed.
Completed books: Ordered by finish date
My other lists: 2022 | 2021 | 2020 | 2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011 Last edited by Dazrin; 12-27-2021 at 07:25 PM. Reason: Updated book list |

Achievements: 1. Buy It, Read It. Start at least 80% of the books I buy. Total: 22/27 (81%) COMPLETED 2. King of the Mountains. My 5 longest books should total over 3000 pages. Total: 3859 COMPLETED Spoiler:
3. Morningstar Crescent. An ongoing challenge to read all books shortlisted for the David Gemmell Morningstar Award. No specific target now the award has been closed down, but I do want to read the lot eventually. There are 14 remaining, so let's aim for 7 books. Total: 7 COMPLETED Spoiler:
4. Paper Chase. Reduce my paper book collection. Out: 6 In: 3 Net reduction: 3 COMPLETED 5. Indiana Jones and the Bundle of Doom. My goal last year was demolished by the late purchase of a large Storybundle. This year I will read at least 10 books from that bundle. Total: 10 COMPLETED Spoiler:
6. Never Gonna Be Respectable. Read a classic or literary award adjacent book. COMPLETED Flaubert's Parrot - Julian Barnes 7. He Scores. Read a book by Nevil Shute. This is a bit of an annual tradition since I inherited my father's collection, so I thought I would make it official. COMPLETED Pied Piper - Nevil Shute Note: My new rule for bundles is that they count as 1 purchase per £ (if there are more books than pounds). So if I bought a bundle of 15 books for £7.50, that would count as 8 purchases and 7 freebies.
