Proposal: Kobo Touch Extended Promoted
The past several releases of Firmware for Kobo Reading devices have introduced some fairly serious bugs with reading Epub files. The newest release, 4.17, that is meant to go in conjunction with the new Libra, is by far the worst yet.
I thought now would be a good idea to consider including the KoboTouch Extended plugin in a default Calibre install. I know some people, (well one,) much prefer the formatting of the Adobe Epub reader, but I think new users will be in for much fewer unpleasant surprises if we use the Touch Extended driver by default. |

The problem is that Kobo doesn't really support sideloaded kepubs. The only reference to sideloading kepubs is part of their guidelines to authors for preparing a book to be published by Kobo. That suggests a way to test the book by changing the file extension. But, it is just about testing the look. While it is unlikely that Kobo will drop support for sideloaded kepubs, because it isn't an officially supported format, I don't think that making kepub the default format is the correct thing to do. And if the kepub generation isn't the default, then there isn't much benefit from merging the two drivers. |

I don't really it matters much anymore what Kobo claims to officially support.,, it's been over a year that each consecutive firmware update is making things progressively worse and more buggy for users... the current state is pretty dire indeed.

And I don't think that matters either. The supported format is epub. Defaulting calibre support to anything else is dangerous and unexpected.
For the record, look at all the people who have installed the KoboTouchExtended driver thinking that it is needed and then complain about the fact that the books aren't epubs. |

Ah well, there is a point to be made.. I suppose if more people return the things as deffective, it will probably be a good thing.
