Amazon Kindle DX graphite - 2.5.8 restoration
Hi, people. I'm sorry for bringing this up, but I recently got a kindle DX graphite with free 3G and the last owner installed version 3.2.1. I figured this may well be the reason why the internet of the device doesn't work. I can't even browse the kindle store, so the thing 'works' only with very basic functions.
I have been able to find an update file for 2.5.8, but I can't simply "update" to an older version, it seems... Please help, if possible. |

It never ran 3.** firmware.
What happens if you reset it to factory specs? |

A factory reset doesn't affect the FW on Kindles .
Unless you have a full original matching image backup, you're fairly screwed, as Kubrick doesn't support the DX. You're pretty much forced into going into even crazier territory, which'd be upgrading to 3.4.2, which I'm not sure anyone ever did, because the whole 3.x on a DX thing was a fairly terrible idea to begin with for roughly 99% of the population . But to answer your question: yes, the outdated FW is why most SSL adjacent services are broken. Last edited by NiLuJe; 01-01-2019 at 03:18 PM. |

I wasn't sure if a reset would work on a hacked device. I owned a DXG for a minute, back in 2010.

I have a Kindle DX with 3G. The only site I can visit is Amazon. My understanding is that internet beyond Amazon is no longing provided for 2nd generation devices. My K3s can go anywhere still. I use them for email when I'm out of the city.

Unfortunately, it seems that Duokan can't be installed from 3.2.1 as well... did somebody try that before? |

It's a shame that amazon discontinued the DX series, anyway. |

I'm not familiar with the "browsing" aspect of the issue and how/if Amazon nerfed the 3G access, but SSL support is definitely borked unless you're running the latest FW (so, even Amazon services would be affected in that scenario).
(To be exact, on 2.x, make that "the latest FW, plus the latest 'service update'" ). |

I'm waiting for the sad day when this happens with Kindle 3! There are quite a few still around, so I'm hoping Amazon will leave things as they are. On newer Kindles one can no longer receive and send email. This was a big plus for me, as I am often without an internet connection and I don't have a cell phone. I love Amazon for providing this! |

[QUOTE=montalex;3794022]On my DX 3G I can no longer visit Wikipedia or Google -- none of the bookmarks work. The only way to go to Amazon is through menu/shop in Kindle Store. Yes, Amazon has definitely limited internet on the DX and Kindle 2.
/QUOTE] I think the Kindle 2 (Sprint 3G) lost Amazon store access a few months ago. |

Many telecoms operators are starting to decommission their 3G networks. That's something which is outside Amazon's control. (More modern Kindle can use 4G/LTE).

When I got my Kindle DX Graphite last year, I updated it to the latest version that runs on it, and that was to 2.5.8.. I do not know how it could have 3.2.1. on it. On mine, using wireless uses up the battery really fast. I used wireless long enough to get it registered, but now I just sideload books to it. By going to "Your Content and Devices" on Amazon, you can download versions of your ebooks for any registered device you have. So, I just download them for the DX Graphite and copy them over. If you haven't registered your device yet, calling tech support at Amazon may help. That's what I did with mine.

Ask the seller if they still have the update_restore-os.bin and the root images to restore to 2.5.8. Otherwise, the very bumpy way to 3.4.2 is the only thing that could remedy your problem. The happy day has come for all Gen 1-2 users. Just by yesterday, Amazon remedy registration of Gen 1-2 Kindle.
I have the image of my DXG, but I cannot share it as it is forbidden by law I think and by my early observation of the image, it seemed that it contains `private key' of which is again not public domain. Sorry! Anyway, firmware 2.5.8 now cannot access the internet through the browser anymore and you cannot annotate and highlight .pdf. I could confirm firmware 3.x enable annotate and highlight .pdf, but prior 3.4.2 the security certificate has expired. It is up to you now, 3.2.1 is useful for .pdf reading but no book store and internet. 2.5.8 not very useful for .pdf, Librerator R2 can only add highlight but not annotate of .pdf. But 2.5.8 enable you to buy book from Amazon. |
