Calibre Folder default location
One my Windows 10 computer when I install Calibre it places the Calibre Folder inside of Documents which then syncs all my books to One Drive which I don't want it to do.
On Linux Calibre Folder defaults to the main user file system outside of documents. Can't I get it to put the Calibre Folder outside of documents when it installs on Windows 10? Edit--never mind, finally figured out I could set it so the folder remained only on my computer. Windows is really pushing Onedrive Will leave the post in case someone else has this issue. You can put your Library on any LOCAL drive, the default NAME will be created in the DEFAULT location IF Calibre can't find the Last Used Library (whatever its name is).
Use Switch/Create option of th Library Icon context menu to choose alternates |

Suggestion - Welcome Wizard could allow user to choose location for "Calibre Library". To maintain compatibility the default for Windows would probably have to be %USERPROFILE%\Documents.
This has been at back of mind since I first installed calibre in Feb 2012, one of the first things I did was to move it out of Documents. That Documents became a dumping ground for everything that's not a Picture, Music, or Video irritates me no end. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 08-16-2018 at 03:03 AM. Reason: typo |

The welcome wizard does allow you to choose a location, you can even point to an exisitng calibre library folder if you want.

Shows how long it is since I did a fresh install. I do a 'lot' of portable installs and they of course don't offer a library location.
Given the OneDrive situation maybe the library location could default to %USERPROFILE%\Calibre BR |

Which is the OneDrive situation? As far as I know, Windows 10 doesn't synchronize to OneDrive a folder unless you have set it that way.

@Terisa - when I got my Dell XPS just over 12 months ago Windows was already installed and ready to go. Onedrive was synchronising everything from Documents, Pictures, Music and Video. I soon put a stop to that.
When my friend got a new HP laptop this year it was setup the same way, which for her is ideal; she's a road-warrior, a freelance architect specialising in AirBnB fit-outs. We added a few extra locations to OneDrive, such as her Autocad stuff. It probably noteworthy that these were both 'custom built' systems, not off the shelf retail. I did ask Dell if there was an option not to install Windows and send me an install DVD - alas there wasn't. I haven't dealt with a fresh Win 10 install to a bare machine, only upgrades from Win 7 and those two pre-installed versions on custom built systems. Sure it can be reconfigured, but... first you have to know it needs doing, and second you have to know/find-out how to do it. BR |

@BetterRed, my last Win10 installation has been 12 months ago, more or less. Yes, checking now the settings I see you have an option to synchronize everything (unchecked for me). Anyway, if you don't know that some of your files are going to the cloud, the original calibre directory is the least of your problems (IMHO).

In other words I'm suggesting that the combined effect of a hardware vendor's default settings for OneDrive and calibre's default settings for where it puts the "Calibre Library" directory could create a hazardous situation for neophytes. BR |

I'm fine with changing the default library location if needed, but unfortunately I am traveling for the next few days so I cant look into it. Feel free to opena bug report about it and I will adress it when I get back.

Edit: Just to note, I actually want Onedrive to back up my photos and documents, but not Calbre. So by default you get the one with the other, which is why it would be nice to locate Calibre someplace else during installation. Last edited by Conan46; 08-16-2018 at 12:53 PM. |

Much thanks for fixing this!
I just installed Calibre to another Windows 10 computer and it defaults the folder under the user path rather than documents. Thanks again! |

Now I'm confused
I saw where calibre now defaults to a new library location upon install.
My existing library is located at C:\Users\<USER>\Documents\calibre When I opened the Library button in the toolbar, I got this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dy4q3e0a6t...20msg.png?dl=0 (I tried to embed the pic but Imgur seems unhappy with me today) I just want to be sure I'm set up right; calibre seems to be working fine but I'd like to avoid future problems. Any suggestions as to where I need to put my library? |

I'm not sure why you got that message. Maybe Windows is synchronising your Documents folder to OneDrive - that seems to be the default behaviour in recent Windows 10 editions.
I have no need for per user libraries, so I put my libraries in D:\Calibre\Libraries. And you can upload images to MR, use the paper clip tool in Advanced mode to access the Manage Attachments page. Uploaded images will appear in the paper clip tool dropdown, if you select them from there they will displayed inline, otherwise they will display at the end of the post. They will be displayed as thumbnails. BR |
