Reliable XML Publishing Tools?
Hi,
I'm researching XML publishing and I was wondering if there are any free or cheap, but reliable ways to make xml epubs. |

+1 for Calibre or Sigil. They do require a working knowledge of XHTML and CSS, but most people on here use one or both of those programs at some point in their publishing process.

You don't actually need ANY tools other than a text editor and a zip program...

In non-free fields I can suggest OxygenXML.

My vote goes to Sigil, using clean html and my own style sheet.

Question is: what are your source formats? There are many freely (=libre) licensed XML workflow tools, including my own. While libre licensed software tends to be gratis (free of charge), it doesn’t have to be, so if your “free” doesn’t refer to user rights, it still could be cheap probably. Also, a lot of publishers are building that kind of stuff inhouse, but it’s too specific to their projects and we cannot obtain their solutions in any way.

Which is a XML-based format, but what happens if OP has to express (source) data which isn’t easy to express in XHTML? From a XML perspective, XHTML is just another input/intermediate/output format, from which comes a great deal of flexibility and therefore future-proofness.

The NCX Toc is XML. The actual parts of the book we read are XHTML.

And XHTML is XML! XHTML is just XML with all the naughty bits left out or hidden.
