Thinking about a new ereader for my mom
Now I have a Kindle PW3, jailbroken and with screensavers hack. But managing collections on it is terrible. I heard it is better on Kobos.
So, I am planning buying me a new reader and passing my PW3 to her. Even if I want an Oasis very much, I could not justify the price, because I would still have the same problems. Most of my books are sideloaded and drm free, so changing systems would not be a problem. So, which backlight kobos are interesting? I will have to import (long wait), cause all kobos in Brazil disappeared from the stores. They are really better to manage the books? Or should I just buy her another accessible PW3? I have an older Kobo Aura and a Paperwhite 3. I've helped my neighbors with their Kobo HDs so I have a little more up-to-date experience with Kobos than from my older one. I prefer the Kindle but the truth is they're both really good. A coin toss is a good way to decide.
I don't do much with collections so I can't help much with that. I think the problem you're going to run into with this question is all the Kobo fans are going to give you excellent reasons to get a Kobo and all the Kindle fans are going to give you excellent reasons to get Kindles. I doubt any of us are going to really be all that helpful. My suggestion is to do some research on both, watch Youtube reviews of both and comparison videos, and then come in here and ask any specific questions you might have. Then you'll have some real information to use for a decision. None of us knows what you'll like best. Except in rare moments of clarity none of us realizes that and we each know which one you'll like best. Barry |

Here's some info on it from the Wiki... https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kob...nd_Collections Both companies make good devices IMO. The Kobo is more "tweakable" in general (no need to jailbreak, it comes that way) while I find the Kindle is more of a "it just works" solution (it's what I bought my Mom). |

By the way, if you run a Mac, be wary of Kobos if you will need to use a SD card. Once I needed to extend the storage in my Kobo Touch, the Mac-Kobo connection started playing up, so I've gone down the Android route (Icarus Illumina).

After that, "interesting" depends on you. The firmware is almost all the same; collections management is the same on all devices. I'm guessing that in Brazil, Overdrive integration is not of interest (I'm pretty sure it's not there yet). Do you want a larger device, do you want waterproofing, do you want the user-controllable light temperature? Or are you after a lower end six inch device on a budget? (btw: there are no backlights on eink devices. The lights are frontlights.) |

The problem with the card and main storage being swapped will be fixed in the next release of calibre.

If it helps, Kobo's also display series information in library/books view.

You provided lots of good advice. I suppose a bigger screen would be appreciated by my mom, but if I get a kobo I will keep it for myself.
But now I am more confident, considering it would be me doing all the management, it will depend on the price I find. Here there is no overdrive, but we don't get goodreads integration either, so.... Thanks for the tips. Enviado de meu XT1635-02 usando Tapatalk |
