Read an Ebook Week Specials at Smashwords
This is Read an Ebook Week at Smashwords -- a site-wide sales promotion. Authors can choose to enroll in the promotion and offer coupon codes of 25% off, 50% off, 75% off, and 100% off (free). I noticed that participation was a bit low last year. I have no idea what the participation rate will be this year, but I have already found a book that I had put on my wishlist for free, down from its regular price of $3.99.
The easiest way to check for titles in the promotion is to go to the main page, look for the Read an Ebook Week box on the left side, and click on the Browse Books on Sale button. Books can be added to the promotion throughout the week, so check back if you don't find anything right away. https://www.smashwords.com/ Last edited by cromag; 03-05-2017 at 05:11 AM. |

Everything from publisher Crossroad Press is 50% off at Smashwords for this sale. They seem to carry a lot of out-of-print genre backlist titles.

I know nothing about this publisher, but all Manifold Press titles are supposed to be 25% off for the sale.

Many ebooks from Untreed Reads are participating in the sale. Most of the coupons I've seen have been for 50% off -- I haven't seen any that are available free. They offer fantasy, science fiction, mystery and other genres.
https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/untreedreads One book I can recommend in particular is Waves in the Wind, by Wade McMahan. This is a very well written fantasy set in Ireland as the old gods are fading. The regular price is $5.99 -- it's available for $3.00 after the coupon code RAE50. https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/542352 $3.00 USD |

I'll take a look at the Nancy Springer.
I've replaced my DTE editions of David Bischoff and Melissa Scott, and have been considering the Elizabeth Scarboroughs but even at 50% discount they'll be getting on for double the price of the others I got. At this point in time and job status, it'll be marginal. I suspect I need to re-read them first; I recall liking The Goldcamp Vampire and Channelling Cleopatra back in the 80s, it's whether I get those and the others in the series, and whether I splurge on the other series I have in DTE (8 books in total). I'm more likely to add the other Melissa Scotts I don't have in DTE. Last edited by maddz; 03-09-2017 at 04:53 AM. |

Well, I ended up with some odds and ends - the few Melissa Scott I didn't have in DTE, a couple of Bill Pronzini Nameless Detective collections, the Nancy Springer, a Nancy A Collins, and 6 of what turned out to be 10 Elizabeth Scarboroughs I had my eye on.
It turns out the last 4 Scarboroughs were books 2-5 in a series of which I had books 1-3 in DTE, so not worth getting at this point in time. Book 1 doesn't seem to be available as an ebook. I need to reread the ones I have to decide whether I want to keep them or not. |

Some of the Elizabeth Ann Scarborough books with a “missing” #1 were actually reprinted by Open Road Media, who acquired them from e-Reads, who for some reason or other never picked up the rest.
IIRC, it would be the 1st in the Godmother and the Songs from the Seashell Archives series (the latter is quite nice and recommended, the former is okay light reads); also the 2 Valentine Lovelace weird westerns in the sale are really funny and also recommended. I got a bunch of her books via an early RAEBW a long time ago, for a mere 25% discount, and considered them well worth it. |

Well, they're not available on Amazon UK (which is the usual situation with Open Road). It's possible the UK rights are held by someone else. Given that the list price of the 6 I did buy is £4.58 each, I think on the whole I did well. (The Harem of Aman Akbar, The Lady in the Loch, the 2 Cleopatras and the 2 Valentine Lovelaces.)
I'll have to try and re-read Song of Sorcery by Saturday to see if I think the series is worth keeping. I recall it being rather whimsical. |

Some more mostly-SFnal sale offers:
Infinity Plus seems to be offering 50% off their catalogue, with an average price of $2 after couponage. They've previously been the focus of a StoryBundle, and the editor Keith Brooke is a fellow MR member as well as an author himself. There's backlist work by award-winners such as Garry Kilworth, Eric Brown, Robert Holdstock, and more. They offer a permafreebie sampler of short stories and chapter excerpts if you want to have a quick skim through their authors. Almost all of BevEditions, who have a catalogue of high quality Canadiana backlist, seem to be free, not just the Lara McClintoch mysteries already mentioned. They have more mysteries, some literary fiction, and some rather good non-fiction reprints on offer. I especially recommend Marian Fowler's Below the Peacock Fan: First Ladies of the Raj which is technically You Set the Price rather than RAEBW sale, but it's one I already owned in hardcover, and an interesting look at colonial life. Ruth Nestvold (ISFDB), who's been nominated for Asimov Magazine's Reader's Choice and Tiptree Awards, is offering 50% off some of her self-pub novels and a backlist short story collection. Plus some freebies. She was also pretty generous with the KDP giveaway freebies several years ago, so I think I might give a try to something or other. Laura J. Underwood (ISFDB) has a novel at 25% off in the sale. This is a small press continuation of a series of fantasy short stories about her bard character Anwyn Baldomyr, who was originally published in venues such as the old Sword & Sorceress anthologies and/or some other anthologies/magazines, I forget which, and which were eventually collected by Wildside Press. Anyway, I remember liking those original stories wherever I read them, enough to give the novel a try. The publisher WolfSinger Publications seems to be offering 25% off everything in their catalogue, which is mostly written by similar authors with a respectable list of small venue trad-published short story credits. Lazette Gifford (ISFDB), who IIRC used to run the website for former Baen/Tor author Holly Lisle, seems to be offering 50% off her catalogue of work, which is mainly newer indie stuff rather than backlist reprints. She's got a bunch of freebie shorts with which to try out her writing. Books We Love are offering 50% off on what looks like the entire catalogue, and has a mix of new and backlist stuff, mostly for romance with some ex-Harlequin authors/titles, and several mystery/thrillers (for some reason, a bunch of Canada-set ones in a cluster). They used to do a lot of KDP Select giveaways, and re-print sf/fantasy author Lee Killough (ISFDB) but those don't seem to be available in the Smashwords catalogue. If you happened to try some of those KDP freebies back in the day and liked the authors enough to have a look at their other work, now is probably a good time to browse through their listings. Sylvia Engdahl (ISFDB) is offering 50% off two of her vintage YA SF novels published during the 1970s: This Star Shall Abide (1st in a trilogy also in a 3-book omnibus edition, not on sale) and Journey Between Worlds which is a standalone ($1.50 each after couponage)
ETA: She also offers for the same price a vintage YA historical biography written by her late mother about Katherine of Valois (wife of Henry V of England), which the blurb says was accepted for publication by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the 1970s and edited, but then the editor left before it was published and her replacement discontinued the series: The Disobedient Queen: Katherine of Valois Last edited by ATDrake; 03-10-2017 at 11:01 PM. |
