Question Calibre not finding my Kindle ebooks

Brand new to Calibre and to Kindle Voyager.

When I click on Device in Calibre, only the Kindle User's Guide is imported into Calibre. I have many other ebooks, but none of them are showing up when I point Calibre to the Kindle.

I am on a Macbook.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks very much.

Question

I HAVE downloaded ebooks from Amazon onto computer. I get a message that I still have to do this because the ebook is in KFX format. Why can Calibre accept some of my ebooks but not all??

Your screenshot shows you are looking at books on the Kindle. The error message seems clear enough when it says such books cannot be copied from your Kindle into Calibre.

Kindle books

Calibre says it can convert about 20 kinds of ebooks. Why would Kindle ebooks not be convertable.

You are additionally confusing Copied and Converting

There are book that can be copied (and managed), but must remain in their original form because of DRM. The Publisher dictates when a book get infested with DRM.

Formats sent to devices DIRECT may also: 1)end up in protected storage. 2)formats that Calibre does not handle.

Kindle PC Then tools from Alf in place when adding to Calibre

@ChipAHoy - None of which are KFX - see ==>> What formats does calibre support conversion to/from?

The error message you posted tells you what do about KFX files, perhaps the message length exceeded your tl:dr threshold!

Here is some background on this.

A little over a year ago Amazon released KFX as a new e-book format in conjunction with the Enhanced Typesetting feature. Since then KFX has gradually become the primary e-book format in use for newer Kindle apps and devices. All books delivered by Amazon in KFX format are DRM-protected with a strong encryption scheme that has not yet been cracked. Without access to unencrypted KFX books there is no reason to implement conversion to other formats.

One reason for the lack of KFX support is that there exist simple workarounds that allow access to the older KF8 and MOBI formats already supported by calibre and the DRM Tools. Another reason is that it is known that, once decrypted, the contents of a KFX book will be inferior the the older KF8 format in respect to archival and convertibility.

If, at some point in the future, access to the older formats becomes more difficult then I believe that the effort will be made to better support KFX. But that day may never come.
