August 2015 Book Club Nominations
Help us select the book that the MobileRead Book Club will read for August, 2015.
The nominations will run through midnight EST July 26 or until 10 books have made the list. The poll will then be posted and will remain open for five days. Book selection category for August is: Science Fiction In order for a book to be included in the poll it needs THREE NOMINATIONS (original nomination, a second and a third). How Does This Work? The Mobile Read Book Club (MRBC) is an informal club that requires nothing of you. Each month a book is selected by polling. On the last week of that month a discussion thread is started for the book. If you want to participate feel free. There is no need to "join" or sign up. All are welcome. How Does a Book Get Selected? Each book that is nominated will be listed in a poll at the end of the nomination period. The book that polls the most votes will be the official selection. How Many Nominations Can I Make? Each participant has 3 nominations. You can nominate a new book for consideration or nominate (second, third) one that has already been nominated by another person. How Do I Nominate a Book? Please just post a message with your nomination. If you are the FIRST to nominate a book, please try to provide an abstract to the book so others may consider their level of interest. How Do I Know What Has Been Nominated? Just follow the thread. This message will be updated with the status of the nominations as often as I can. If one is missed, please just post a message with a multi-quote of the 3 nominations and it will be added to the list ASAP. When is the Poll? The poll thread will open at the end of the nomination period, or once there have been 10 books with 3 nominations each. At that time a link to the initial poll thread will be posted here and this thread will be closed. The floor is open to nominations. Please comment if you discover a nomination is not available as an ebook in your area. I'll nominate The Genome by Sergei Lukyanenko. It showed up today as a deal on bookbub for 1.99 so I bought it and put it on my TBR list. Too bad it's not also region month as well!

I'll nominate Agent of Change, one of the gateway books to the Liaden Universe. This is available as a free book from:
Amazon BaenEbooks.com Kobo The Audible version isn't free, but is WhisperSync enabled: Audible ) The Liaden Universe is a complex universe spanning millenia, and is multi-threaded. There are lots of entry points into it, but this is the most obvious one, since it is the first book published. The Liaden Universe books are character-driven books with a healthy dose of world building over time. They are not "shoot 'em ups", though we certainly get some action in this one. They are also not "hard science" books, but probably fit into "space opera" as much as anything else. They are about cultures and their interactions, since we have three main "species" - humans, Liadens, and Yxtrang. Oh, plus Clutch Turtles who appear here and there. The Amazon description for this book is: Spoiler:
I highly recommend the books of Lee and Miller, and think this is an excellent entry into the Liaden Universe. And it's FREE. |

And I'll nominate a second book, The Steerswoman, by Rosemary Kirstein. This is another character-driven series, but one with an interesting premise.
From the Amazon description: Spoiler:
This book isn't free, but it's certainly quite reasonably priced at $2.99 (US) (£1.91 UK). Unfortunately, no Audible version of it, however. Amazon US Amazon UK Kobo CA Kobo US Note: Kobo versions are couponable! This series is one you likely haven't heard of, but that you'll thank me for discovering after you read it. They're _intelligent_ books, with strong female protagonists. And a premise that is intriguing and different, but quite compelling. Last edited by CRussel; 07-21-2015 at 02:36 PM. Reason: Added UK |

And for my third nomination, I'll second Dhalgren. Plus add a link or two.
Dhalgren at Amazon Kindle Unlimited or $9.99 Dhalgren at Amazon UK (£5.99) Dhalgren at Kobo ($12.99!!) No Audible for Dhalgren. (Can we please ask nominators to provide at least a couple of links for books they're nominating? It makes it much easier on everyone. Thanks.) Last edited by CRussel; 07-21-2015 at 02:36 PM. I'll second The Steerswoman. I had added it to my TBR list when you described it in the What are you Reading thread. It sounds very good.
