BAM is the nearest book shop in my area and they are increasingly a gift shop containing bric-à-brac, several racks of magazines and a few shelves of books. I was thinking of Toys-r-us, but yes...
Bookstores are in a similar bind: Walmart and the pharmacies kill them on recent releases, Amazon on backlist.

TRU is in the same boat as BAM and BN. They carry a niche product that other retailers (Wal-Mart in particular) also carry. WM likely has a better price and is a more convenient source for the consumer. Although a creator of belles lettres like Douglas Preston, Esq. (snark) would disagree, WM is far more destructive to B&M bookstores (more snark) like BAM or BN than Amazon could ever be.


The reasons indie book shops are not so affected and are actually increasing in number? I can think of two:

1) They have a variety of books, not primarily BPH pap and
2) they generally have clerks that actually know books and might possibly offer intelligent recommendations.

I believe there was a Borders in the same mall that the BAM is in. Years and years ago. Also another book store as well.
