Books a million to go private
The majority stockholders are buying everybody else out.
http://www.publishersweekly.com/#pat...a-million.html Not a terribly big deal (only $21M) but they are the second largest B&M chain still standing in the US. |

And they reported a profit for 2014. Perhaps, they see a turn around in the retail B&M book/entertainment business.

My local Books A Million just downsized their book inventory again. And most of that space was used to add toys.

Another Toys-R-Us closed in the Twin Cities. I wonder how sustainable switching from books to toys will be.

BAM is the nearest book shop in my area and they are increasingly a gift shop containing bric-à-brac, several racks of magazines and a few shelves of books. They don't have a lot more books than Wal-Mart. Since Wally carries the best selling BPH tripe, that doesn't leave much of a raison d'être for BAM.

Bookstores are in a similar bind: Walmart and the pharmacies kill them on recent releases, Amazon on backlist. |

The reasons indie book shops are not so affected and are actually increasing in number? I can think of two: 1) They have a variety of books, not primarily BPH pap and 2) they generally have clerks that actually know books and might possibly offer intelligent recommendations. |

"BAM" is about 10 to 12 miles from me. A B&N is about 45 miles. Nothing else!

If BAM is adding more toys and gifts, then they are also following Borders' path.
