Free (iTunes UK) Hidden Empire by Kevin J. Anderson [Sci-Fi Epic Space Opera]
Hidden Empire by Dune and Star Wars tie-in writer Kevin J. Anderson (ISFDB, Wikipedia) is the 1st in his Saga of the Seven Suns series of epic far-future science fiction space opera novels involving plucky human colonizers vs some kind of lingering alien possibly-killer robots or whatnot, free courtesy of publisher Simon & Schuster UK.
This is the iTunes UK store's featured Free Book of the Week. Currently free, probably just through to Monday @ iTunes UK. The last time there was a Simon & Schuster-imprint iTunes weekly freebie, it didn't drop or get matched anywhere else before it expired, IIRC, but here's some linkage for your price-drop-check convenience should you want to try anyway: Amazon UK, Kobo UK, B&N UK. Google you'll have to look up yourself, since I can't even see their UK selections even with a VPN. Needless to say, the chances of this one crossing the pond are likely nil, since this also seems to be a different edition from the North American one. Description Hidden Empire begins a dazzling space opera fit to stand with the classics of the genre, combining the politics of Frank Herbert's Dune, the scope of Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy, and the pageantry and romance of Star Wars In the far future, humanity began to search the stars, sending out vast spaceships that would take generations to reach their goals. In the depths of space they encountered the Ildiran empire - apparently the galaxy's only other intelligent civilization. The Ildirans came to Earth and passed on the knowledge of their stardrive, allowing humanity to expand to the stars. Almost two hundred years after that first contact, there are human colonies proliferating through the galaxy. As Mankind seizes the future, danger comes from the past, for two human archaeologists glean forbidden knowledge from the ruins of a dead world. Once, the insect-like Klikiss ruled the stars. Now, only their robot servants remain, guardians of a terrible technology - the Klikiss Torch, which has the power to create suns. Now, Humanity prepares to flex its new found muscle and activate the Torch for the first time in millennia, but there are reasons the Klikiss empire fell, and a train of events is about to be set in motion, that will change the universe... |

I've read this. It had a few good ideas, but I didn't feel compelled to read the rest of the series.
