OQO in-depth review at handtops.com

Handtops.com has an in-depth review of the OQO with a lot of screenshots.

The conclusion is, unlike of what we've read elsewhere, a very positive one:

The OQO is a very pleasant device to work with and use. The screen is very bright, keyboard is very usable and the device is comfortable to hold with two hands. The speed of XP and it's GUI is good, but don't expect desktop quality performance. Keep in mind as well that with desktop quality performance comes desktop size, heat, power drain, etc etc. And I have yet to see anyone take a laptop out of their jacket pocket or bag and proceed to check email, directions, etc. The OQO team has made a beautiful product that will truly begin to change computing as we know it.

Anyone know if anyone's made it to run Linux yet?

I assume it will eventually, but I just don't know how soon.

One of the BSDs is a more-likely candidate in the short term. FreeBSD 5.2 with "Project Evil" will probably be the easiest to get up and running on the device, based on its odd hardware and chipset configuration. Linux would surely follow.

I'd much-rather see FreeBSD or OpenBSD running on this device, for the speed and functionality of the kernels running in those flavors, than Linux... but I'm only slightly jaded.

The price is definately prohibitive though, to even try buying one to hack on.

If you dig into the link from Morpheus a bit, you can find this...Linux on the OQO

The hard part with Linux will be the touch screen as there are no drivers.

While I didn't have the OQO, there are a few shortcomings that the reviews failed to mentioned...First this thing doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, that's understandable given its small footprint... so you will have to use an external one...the reviewer had a firewire one but most pc users are likely to buy a USB one, and the OQO's USB is 1.1 not the high-speed 2.0.

also not mentioned is battery life, many reviews site mentioned something as little as 2 hours. That's not acceptable for road warriors.
