Simon & Schuster testing the DRM-free waters

Quote:
Simon & Schuster's fledgling science fiction and fantasy imprint, Saga Press, will publish its e-books without DRM, the company said Wednesday afternoon.

Quote:
said Joe Monti, executive editor of Saga. "In launching our imprint, we are pleased to offer this convenience to our readers and test the waters of DRM-free publishing.”

I really hope that they will come out with an ebook version of McCaffrey's Harper Hall trilogy.

I'd really like them to be available in the US too. Of course they're handled by S&S's Aladdin imprint right now (in paper) since they're considered Children's/Young Adult books. Also from things Todd McCaffrey's said there still might not be a contract for US eBook rights.

FWIW if you're willing to "travel" they are available in the UK (from Transworld/RandomHouse) and have been for a couple of years.

I bought the Harper Hall trilogy on my journey through Koboland.

Saga Press, huh? If they can publish some highly desirable stuff this would be great. I find myself getting more and more devices that don't necessarily work super good together... so DRM is becoming a real life problem for me. And I would love to just throw my most recent purchase on to whatever reader I am using this week.

Why not just strip off the DRM? Problem solved.

I think Simon & Schuster is Carl Sagan's publisher. I really want an ebook version of Contact, maybe the new imprint will finally make that happen.

Because, in a number of jurisdictions, that's illegal. And some people, quite reasonably, worry about that.

Besides, it's a matter of principle.
Having DRM is essentially like saying "You, the person BUYING this item, are a horrible criminal, only buying this to distribute it, so we HAVE to protect ourselfs by making it complicated for you to actually use the product!"

^ that. If you buy DRMed stuff you still give a pro-DRM vallet-vote.
Whether you clean your purchase thereafter doesn't matter.
Not everyone of us wants to do this. And those of us who don't buy crippled media usually don't limit it to books. After all there are games and music too.

I never bought from Simon & Schuster directly, since they did not want my money. (Literally - they said "Because you live in Austria, we do not want to sell you the book." - So I bought it, the same book, from Kobo.)

I just did a quick search, the Kobo Terms of Use use the word "buy" quite often, so if they really mean that you're only leasing it, then I'd bet the terms are worthless.
The word "lend" or "lease" never appeared.

Also, my response is not only to S&S or eBooks but DRM in general. One of the worst examples are DVDs.
