Amazon new launch event June 18th
Don't know much about it, but the Amazon site has a banner at the top of the page mentioning a new device launch event on June 18th in Seattle. Says you can request an invitation here...
https://www.amazon.com/oc/launcheven...pf_rd_i=507846 A post on TechCrunch about it. Lots of speculation, but not much info, they (and others) are speculating it's the much talked about smart phone. http://techcrunch.com/2014/06/04/ama...racking-phone/ Last edited by AnemicOak; 06-04-2014 at 05:23 PM. |

It's a phone. The clue is in the title.

From how some of them move their head I think something with a 3D display.

It is a phone -- look at the last gal with glasses. Screen crops shows her holding a black device with headphone jack. Width approx of a phone. It must have kenetic gyros or some movement related functions.

I was thinking some kind of electronic pet. A vibrating hamster or something. A vibrating hamster that has ebooks and music and lets you watch movies. And you can use it as a phone.

It uses the typical phone sensors and a set of cameras to track eye position and movement to create a 3D illusion. The screen acts like a glass pane atop a box. Rumors and pictures have been floating about for months. |

See this link:
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/ama...ung-2014-06-05 Its a 3D Smartphone and Apple and Samsung are shivering. Amazon investors are worried the phone will be offered at cost without any profits added. The advantage of 3D for a Smartphone is that layers of icons could become the Main Menu. On the Samsung Galaxy s5 one can have 7 Menus but one must swipe to get to them. The Amazon phone may allow access to all that in one screen. I'm locked into my s5 for two years but then I will naturally upgrade to the new Amazon smart phone. |

Of course, it will look awesome at the unveiling, people will flock to pre-order and purchase it, and then when it comes out many will have a display that makes people's heads explode or something, we will all say how rubbish our devices are, and Sirmaru will say it's a brilliant device and it's all in our imagination. Sounds cool though.

Ehhh...
It's a house brand smartphone. Just like the FireTV is a house brand STB. They have a hardware R&D and design group they need to keep the Kindle line running, might as well put them to use designing other commodity consumer electronics products. They're a good enough group and the hardware should be good but don't expect miracles, especially on pricing. It'll probably run $299 contract-free, maybe $99 with AT&T contract. |

Another gimmick that will probably fail, just like 3D TV. Cool when first released, but then consumers decide it isn't worth purchasing and another one bites the dust.
