Broken pipe issues

So I'm returning to the Kindle and Calibre fold after several years of not really using either. Got the Paperwhite today and really like it.

I'm setting it up so that Calibre will grab any new articles from about 5 blogs I like to follow and then send them to my Kindle on a weekly basis. I've got it as far as making the book, but the email settings seem to be borked.
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/wizard/send_email.py", line 173, in test_email_settings
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/smtp.py", line 128, in sendmail
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/smtplib.py", line 307, in connect
IOError: [Errno 32] Broken pipe

Log:
I started with my normal gmail account but realized that it probably wasn't the greatest to start with because it had two factor authentication. I then used an alternate gmail which doesn't, no luck. I then set up an outlook.com address, same result. I've tried TLS port 587 and SSL port 465 on all three.

If I attach the file to an email and send it to my Kindle address, it shows up in the personal documents and downloads beautifully, so its not an issue on Amazon's end.

Hi Kovid!

So after you posted that, I've done the following

Create a free GMail account at Google: I created a brand new one just for kicks.
Goto Preferences->Email in calibre and click the “Use Gmail” button and fill in the information asked for.: Done
calibre will then use GMail to send the mail.: Get the same log
If you are sending to your Kindle, remember to update the email preferences on your Amazon Kindle page to allow email sent from your GMail email address. Also note that Amazon does not allow email delivery of AZW3 and new style (KF8) MOBI files.: New address added before I attempted the test.

I'm doing this on a MacBook Air, no anti-virus.

I guess I'll go try it on my other computer which runs Ubuntu.

Well, something must be borked on that MacBook Air. I'm writing this from my Ubuntu machine which sent the email just fine.

Sorry to bug you Kovid. Keep up the good work.

Late to the party

Sorry to rekindle this post, but I've been searching for errors similar to mine. I've tried my gmail, gmx and a brand new hotmail account to no avail; each time I get the same "broken pipe" error posted below. Can someone help?

That most likely indicates something on your computer, most likely an antivirus/secutirty program/firewall is preventing calibre from connecting to the mail server.

Kovid,

Thank you for your quick reply. Also, thank you for Calibre!!!

I uninstalled an ad-blocker that I had on my chrome browser, but other than that I have no anti-virus, security or firewalls on my computer or wifi (other than a password).

Further, I was able to send a few books earlier this month on a different wifi with no problem, but the last two weeks I've tried on multiple wifi networks to no avail.

Could the issue be that Calibre can't connect with a password-protected wifi? Do you have any other ideas?

Thank you again for your assistance!

Your Computer connects to WiFi
If the network connection expires, you need to reestablish it before asking Calibre to use the Mail
The password you set in Calibre is for Mail sending, not the connection

Greetings Kovid! You are 'The Guy'!

Hi Jason,

How are you? Did you set you amazon.com with allow emails account to send to your device? (if you'll use GMX, add on amazon this mail, if you use outlook, add this outlook on amazon.com). I cannot show the whole way cause my amazon.com account is in portuguese. Just realize that if you not inform what e-mail you will use, amazon tags as spam and the will never download on device.

I just decide participate cause a I had this same issue "Broken Pipe", and after reading FAQs, I decide signup GMX mail account (you mention Gmail and not GMX, check this cause they are totally different) and the issue still appears so I went to Amazon.com, the new GMX mail was been set as authorized and 'voilà'!

Any help you can send me PM. Good day for every one. My regards from Brazil,

R. Ribeiro
