Just got the "Marvin" book reader app that everyone seems to be raving about, full version is free today on the app store. Not sure for how much longer - get it while you can!

The author of the app said it would free for a very limited time so yeah, it's now or never as they say.
But this is such a good app that even when at 3 Dollars or so it is still a great deal.

Darn, missed it, no longer free today. What does the paid version add?

Does it have page numbers? The Marvin app I'm using now doesn't. It only shows how many pages are left in chapter which is useless to me.

No, it doesn't seem to have page numbers, just how many left in the chapter.

It does have page number but for the chapter. You can choose between page countdown and page count up.
I believe total page count in a book is a feature that will come later.

It is difficult to get the exact page size for the entire book in ePub. Would an approximation do? ePub is made from multiple files and only one is loaded at a time.

And yet in dedicated e-readers you have total page count. So it should be technically feasible on a tablet.

ADE has its own numbering system that is unrelated to actual screen pages. What they do is use the number of bytes in a file to determine the number of pseudo pages. (Those little numbers that show up every now and then in the right margin). This is what you are referring to, not real screen pages which is what marvin counts.

There is some value in what ADE does since the page numbers do not change if you change the font size but they are really unrelated features. You can read about page numbers in our wiki.

@sparklemotion - Marvin was free for a limited time to help existing iPad users switch to the new version without paying. There's no difference between *that* free version and the paid one (there's a forever-free version of Marvin that has a "shows one book at a time in the library" limit.

@DaleDe - ADE-style numbering is what I'm working on.

Marvin already provides a scroll bar that approximates the book but the author is working on a solution using the ADE method of counting arbitrary sized pages of 1024 characters. This should not only provide some idea of how many pages there are but it independent of the font size in use. Kindle and several others also uses a scroll bar which basically provides a percentage.

Ah ok I misunderstood what you mean when you said would an approximation do. My mistake. I do know about the scroll bar. I would just love to see page numbers in Marvin like my Kindle Paperwhite has and also the iBooks app has page numbers.
