PalmOne releases PIM upgrade

Okay so we're a little behind on this, but...
From PalmOne:

Quote:
PIM Support Update for Tungsten E, Tungsten T3, Zire 31 and Zire 72 handhelds

This update backs up the extended Personal Information Manager (PIM) functions of Tungsten E, Tungsten T3, Zire 31 and Zire 72 handhelds, and corrects incompatibilities discovered between these devices and some third-party applications. In addition, the update includes several smaller code adjustments and solutions.
Haven't seen much more about it than this. There's no specification about what problems this fixes, or with what 3rd party apps it deals. I went ahead and installed it on my T|E, but there's nothing noticeable.

I noticed this about 2 weeks ago on PalmOne's web site, as I was going through and doing a standard "search" for data upgrades. Figured it was time, since I had just finished re-imaging my computer and was reinstalling everything anyway.

But you're right. There is absolutely no information to detail exactly what they did here with this service pack, ... and sheesh! Could they have been any quieter about it's release?

Basically, it fixes compatibility problems with 3rd-party applications that modify the contents of the addressbook and datebook. Examples are Agendus, MyWeek, Supernames, etc.
Not everyone saw the compatibility problems, but it was infuriating to those that did. PalmOne sent a message about the update to those that reported the bug.
That's about it! The Brighthand forums are pretty good for questions about Palm hardware. They don't have anything like mobileread for reading software, though!

We've tried to reverse engineer the differences between pre-update and post-update here, and we can find nothing different.

Does anyone have an actual list of what is "fixed", with real-world examples we can use to validate this?

PIM Nightmare ......wake me up PLEASE!!!

Good Afternoon,

Hoping you can help me out ASAP!!!

I think I may have done something very bad!!!

I used JackSprat to delete a bunch of built-in's on my handheld (Tungsten T3).....more specifically: I removed / deleted (amoung other things)=>

Calendar
Contacts
Memo
Tasks

I did this because I have (respectively):

DateBk5
PhoneMagic
MemoPLUS
ToDoPLUS

But now I see today that my conduits (for the Palm Desktop) have nothing to sync up to on the handheld!!!!

Am I just completely screwed or what?

I DID use the backup feature of JackSprat but have already used ALL of the space saved with JackSprat and JackFlash.

Is that the only option though? Complete restore?
If so ....... sigh ..... how do I go about doing it?

I've spent COUNTLESS hours getting the handheld to where it is now so I really want this to be a last resort option.

Thanks,

Syno

Looks like you are using an older version of JackSprat. I remember that later versions left hidden stubs in the Flash to preserve HotSync conduit functionality. I suggest you do a complete restore. How to do that and how to save you files you can find in the JackSprat documentation:

http://www.brayder.com/support/jacks...kSpratBeta.pdf
or http://www.brayder.com/support/jacksprat/JackSprat.pdf (if you are using an older version)

So that's pretty much my only option 'ey? That stinks!!! No way to sort out which PIM is where in the jackSprat backup so that I may just install those. A complete restore is going to be a MESS !!!

Cheers,

Well....it's not the ONLY option....

Technically, you could ask someone to copy the ROM files to their SD card (using Filez or something similar) and then have them email it to you. However, that is tedious and somewhat illegal, so I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

Jacksprat should've left a stub so the apps could sync. What version Sprat did you use? In any case, just write down what apps you moved to ROM so that it won't take as much time next round. Yep, I recommend the full restore, upgrade your Jack-apps, then re-apply the ROM moves. Heh, I spent a long time on my first use as well.

Hmmmm..........

Well, I have a copy of the ROM (using JackSprat) and I have an extra Palm m515 laying around and have TealMover.

How exactly would I go about getting those back and then getting them to my new handheld ............certainly that would not be illegal. I'm doing it all myself and I own it all.

How would I accomplish this?

Thanks very much for some hope ????

Cheers,

Well now!! …………………

Someone suggested that I use Filez to look at things (instead of TealMover). Here is what I found!!!! ....................

In black colored letters:
Name: Calendar-PDat_appl_a68k
Size: 84b, 0 recs.

In GREEN colored letters:
Name: CalendarDB-PDat
Size: 585404b, 4701 recs.

In black colored letters:
Name: CalendarLocationsDB-PDat
Size: 84b, 0 recs.

In black colored letters:
Name: Contacts_PAdd_appl_a68k
Size: 84b, 0 recs.

In black colored letters:
Name: ContactsBDIndex-PAdd
Size: 8868b, 366 recs.

In GREEN colored letters:
Name: Contacts DB-PAdd
Size: 676608b, 1687 recs.

In black colored letters:
Name: Memos-PMem_appl_a68k
Size: 84b, 0 recs.

In GREEN colored letters:
Name: MemosDB- PMem
Size: 79948b, 201 recs.

In black colored letters:
Name: Tasks-PTod_appl_a68k
Size: 84b, 0 recs.

In GREEN colored letters:
Name: Tasks-PTod
Size: 5077b, 51 recs.

These don’t appear to be in Flash.
ROM box is checked in the upper right corner of Filez.
There are NO attributes checked off in Filez for any of these.

So, they APPEAR to be there. It least it looks like it.

What do I need to look for (as to why they may not be working)? ……………if you don’t mind.

Cheers,

Syno

Lightbulb Hotsync Log

Sounds like it's time to look into your Hotsync Log.

By the way, are you Windows or Mac?.

First make sure you have those conduits enabled as default using the Hotsync manager. They may have been disabled by something else.

Next, run a Hotsync and post the resulting Hotsync Log. It will tell us one of the following:

1. The conduit tries to run, but finds no partner application.
2. The conduit tries to run, but finds no compatible database.
3. The conduit runs, but sees no difference between the desktop and palm databases.
4. The conduit does not run.

Post what you get!

Hey.... O.K.- thanks very much for sticking with me. Let me post my log. Again, I have just re-installed the Palm Desktop so I'm not sure how it could be the conduits themselves (but I suppose you never know). DateBook, Address, ToDos, and MemoPad are set as "Do Nothing" ...................Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memo are set to "syncronize".

Here's what I get:

HotSync operation started 6/23/2005 12:16:20 PM
Inbox To Go - sync configured to Do Nothing
Expense - sync configured to Do Nothing
OK BankBook Conduit
TimeCopy: host 2005/06/23 12:16:25, palm 2005/06/23 12:16:24, diff: 1s
OK TimeCopy
OK Documents To Go
OK Adobe Reader
Ultrasoft Money - sync configured to Do Nothing

Looks like the conduits don't even run (or pick up what's on the handheld ?????

Any advice? As I say, it looks like the "stubs" are there on the handheld. Do I need to do anything with them?

Thanks,

Syno

Have you tried switching the sets? Meaning turning off Contacts, and turning on Address; turning off Calendar and turning on Datebook?

You may need the old conduits as you no longer have the special programs.

I have not yet .........

I was waiting for one last "miracle" to get me going. Just seems like those "stubs" or whatever those things I found in FileZ should do the trick.

Why have I been waiting on the "miracle" instead of switching over to the old conduits??

1) The old ones don't handle the category colors (amoung other things).
2) Some of the other third part app.'s I use (i.e.- DateBk5 and PhoneMagic) will eventually support the extra field in the Palm Desktop (and the old conduits do not).

Blah, blah, blah ........

Anyway ...... I'm going to probably wait until tomorrow just to see if any other idea's crop up and then I'm taking the "plunge" and switching to the old conduits ( hopefully (as a last resort) even that will work .......... if not, I'm really screwed!!!!

Cheers,

Syno

I'm confused, what exactly are you trying to figure out here? OS5 devices ship with the new PIM applications (Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memos), instead of the previous applications.

Your existing conduits for Datebook, AddressBook, ToDo, Memos should work fine with these new PIM applications, because they are shadow databases.

Records are written to Contacts for example by default. If an application requests a record from AddressDB.pdb, it is copied there on-demand, and any changes put there are copied back into the main database (ContactsDB-PAdd.pdb) when completed.

Why do you care, as long as your data gets into and out of the applications that need it?
