Wharton, Edith: Twilight Sleep, v.1, 18 Feb 2008.
A novel of 1927. Twilight sleep was an analgesic technique that relieved pain whilst leaving the patient minimally conscious. The characters in this jazz age novel are applying desperate coping strategies to fill the empty void of their lives. These include frantic busyness, new age medicine, Indian Gurus, and drink.
