μcard - 2 Terabyte memory card from Taiwan
Details are still quite sketchy, but according to Digitimes, Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and some local IT firms will soon mass produce a new type of memory card called “μcard”, which will be unveiled during the Taipei International Electronics Show (Taitronics) from October 8-12. Mass production for the new card will begin in early 2005.
The card will support up to 2TB of storage capacity, be able to transfer 120MB of data per second, 10 times faster than Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. Additional features for the new card include USB 2.0 compatibility, low power, fast I/O and a compatible interface with existing memory cards. Sounds too good to be true! |

Wow! 2TB just a few years back was enough to run a large business on.

If this comes to pass, with that sort of astounding transfer speed, would it not probably put an end to hard disks? Why would you need an 80 gig hard drive when you could get a 500 gig card, and presumably carry it around with you??!!

A couple of other webpages also reported about ucard and everyone talked about what you could do with 2TB (like collect 1000 DivX movies on one card).
What I am not sure about is whether the card would be immediately available in a 2TB version, or whether it is just supported by the card's specs! If you look at the Digitimes article Morpheus provided, you see that the Sony Memory Stick Pro and Duo carts can also physically address up to 2TB. Yet, the biggest Memory Stick Pro available right now is 1GB. Sorry to spoil the fun |
