Anyone watching the MS-BN announcement?
Microsoft is holding a press conference this afternoon (Pacific Daylight Time) for a "major announcement." Leaks hint at a new, MS based tablet possibly jointly developed and marketed with Barnes and Noble.

And there are good odds the announcement has nothing to do with tablets or ebooks, but rather XBOX and media. The most likely announcement, now that B&N is *totally* out of it (not even as a content partner) and given the Hollywood location is the long awaited XBOX TV-over-ip service. Other options are a portable gaming device (XBOX SURFACE?) or even a new XBOX console.
Any of the three would be truly major announcements. Most everything else would be in the "meh", category and lead to a serious backlash from the press. We'll know soon enough. |

Clearly a business tablet. I bet it's expensive.

It's a Tablet after all.
Pretty cool one, at that. Thin, built-in stand, magnetic cover that doubles as a multitouch keyboard. Gorilla glass and VaporMg casing (strong+light Magnesium), USB + HDMI. Dual antenna WiFi N. Will come in ARM and x86 flavors. "The tablet that works and plays." Hmm... Edit: It has two digitizers. One for Pen! Okay, that's it: me want. Agreed. I'm not normally much of a Microsoft fan but this tablet has me sitting up and taking notice. I'll be watching this one closely.

They won't even quote prices. Like I said, expensive.

A consumer tablet, this is not. Microsoft clearly designed it for the business crowd.

They gave comparables for pricing. My guess is that when they said that the ARM version would be comparable to other ARM tablets, they were allowing for what happens to tablet prices between now and release--same for the more PC like Pro version. They said it would be comparably priced with ultrabooks. Hard to predict pricing sweetspots some months out.

Which means $600 minimum for the cheapest one.

Ultrabooks are in the $1,000 range. I'll never pay that much for a tablet.
