Windows 98SE on Pocket PC
Do you think that one of the newer Clies or Palms would have the power to run Windows? Well, if you own a PPC, you can be ready for some kind of experiment...
PocketGamer is carrying a story on the successful emulation of Windows 95 and Windows 98SE on the Pocket PC. This was made possible by a Pocket PC port of Bochs, a DOS emulator. If you're keen to try this on your own Pocket PC, you'll need a minimum of a 256MB memory card (or stream the image over a wireless network) and you'll need a program like Nyditot Virtual Display to increase your screen resolution. Oh, yes, and you'll also need the emulator. |

Heh, what would it be good for except for emulating a dreaded blue screen?

Actually, you can do a _lot_ more than just run Windows with this (basically dosbox for PPC). People are getting all sorts of DOS software running (including warcraft, warcraft 2, dune 2, UFO, EOB1 and 2, Dungeonmaster, etc.... the list goes on!
Check out http://mamaich.kasone.com/ again as well, as it has been updated as of 21/6. Craig (happily playing SSG's Halls of Montezuma and SSI's Unlimited Adventures on his ipaq ) |

There's also an alternative DOS emulator for PPC, handheld PC's, etc:
PocketDOS is a very polished product that emulates a 80186 processor out of the box (but can still run a lot of software that was compiled for all processor types). There are also 386/486 processor plugins available that improve the quality of emulation and let you run a large software selection. It's shareware as opposed to Dosbox which is freeware, but is also well supported and is under constant improvement. |
