HP iPAQ: Roadmap 2004

I recommend you visit Brighthand who gives some details on the upcoming iPAQs for 2004. According to Brighthand, HP isn't planning to release any new handhelds for more than two months. And long-time iPAQ users will be disappointed to learn that the company is phasing out the use of expansion packs, which won't be necessary anymore with all the built-in functionality and the availability of CompactFlash or SDIO cards.

One new iPAQ on the list will be a new hx4700 model with 128MB of RAM, plus more than 20MB in a File Store. Another device, the hx2700, a replacement for the h5550, will include a fingerprint scanner, which could be useful for security protection in larger cooperations.

Looks like the new hx4700 is going to be a killer PDA... IPAQabilities posted some new (unverified) information:

- 4" VGA display
- Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
- Wireless connectivity: Infrared Port (SIR), Wi-Fi 802.11b, Bluetooth v1.2
- Intel Bulverde 624MHz processor
- Memory will consist of 128 RAM / 64 ROM
- CompactFlash AND Secure Digital Input Output card slots
- D-Pad will apparently be replaced with a touchpad navigation system
- New casing material unlike any of the current models
- Powered by a 1800mAh lithium Ion battery with an option for a 3600mAh
- Dimensions would be 129 X 77 X 14.7 mm

According to their source, the iPAQ should be released sometime in the end of July / early August 2004.

Nice, although I have a Clie, I find the future PDA market in general very attractive. Bigger & brighter screens & at the same time (hopefully) better battery longevity - what better can an ebook enthusiast expect?
