Palm Garnet VM now available for Nokia N770, N800, N810
Access has released a Virtual Machine of PalmOS 5 for the Nokia 770, N800, and N810. I haven't tried it yet because I need to charge my 770 first. I also wanted to share it immediately.
Do you realize what a great idea this was? First of all, this is the only Garnet VM anywhere. No other Palm emulator went beyond OS4. Plus, I think there is a significant number of people moved on from Palm to one of Nokia's ITs. Most of us miss our Palm software, still have it backed up, and now we can run it again. When Access releases the next PalmOS in a couple years, there will potentially be a large number of people who still use their Palm software, and will consider moving back to the PalmOS. Brilliant. http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/13/v...tablet-hoozah/ http://www.access-company.com/products/gvm/ |

So if I buy a N810 I can run DateBk5 on it. That was good news. I wonder when they will start selling it...

Small update: I haven't downloaded a copy yet, they are probably overwhelmed with requests. But I have seen a review. The beta only has one orientation, and it looks like it currently uses 320 by 480 of the tablet's 800 by 480 resolution. The actual screen area is smaller than I had before on my Tapwave Zodiac, but it does have the same resolution. Hopefully they will add a full screen mode. |

Has anyone downloaded this? I have been unable to. I have registered several different emails, and received no response.

I downloaded and installed it for my 770 yesterday, it's working nicely for me so far, it can go horizontally and vertically, although they could fill the screen up a bit more, it even ran a few of Astrawares games with no problem, this is tempting me to get a N810 as my next Palm, it feels much better than StyleTap on PocketPC!

It worked well for about 2.5 hours today. Then the GVM crashed and took all my apps and data with it. It does show promise, but it's also not quite ready for prime time. Maybe for running some used-every-so-often Palm apps, but not for replacing my Palm TX. |

I just looked now, and see that I might be able to extract a ROM from my own device. Which would be nice, but a lot more work than a VM. |

I have tried MobiPocket Reader under Garnet VM on a 770. After sorting out that I need to "install" the .prc e-books, this went smoothly. The 320x480 resolution only uses 40% of the screen, but it is a start.
I did not try a secure e-book, but the "about Mobipocket" tab is showing a PID so I assume this will work. There are reports that eReader and eReader PRO also work. Last edited by wallcraft; 11-15-2007 at 04:29 AM. |
