App failing to install
On the Amazon app store, a paid app is given away free every day.
I'm always downloaded these free apps, but unfortunately about 50% of them do NOT install. And when they do install, a smaller percentage don't run on our PE. I'm curious why about half of the apps do not install. Let's take todays free app: Everlands Try installing this free app. It will not install. Looking at the logs, I see that it's failing because it cannot open secure container: smdl2tmp1 E/PackageHelper(26153): Failed to create secure container smdl2tmp1 E/DefContainer(26153): Failed to create container smdl2tmp1 Anyone have any ideas what smdl2tmp1 is? A directory? A File? Maybe we should use this thread to examine the free apps that are available daily that DO not install and try to brainstorm what's going on. I betcha we'll be able to at least get a few of these app installable... maybe . |

I think we need to remove a file named "smdl2tmp1.asec" in .android_secure/smdl2tmp1.asec. I'll try that later as it's time to sleep.

I have seen where some apps won't install if the SD card is installed. For those of us using LINK2SD where can we store an apk file to try install it while the SD card is removed? Would a USB thumb drive be a good option?

Additional note about Everlands:
the app designed to run on Android 1.5+. devmapper is included in Dingo. So, the app might be installed and run on Dingo. I don't have it and could not test. But someone with any version of Dingo might try. |

The new app today, "Trip Journal" (I think), can't even download onto the edge because it doesn't pass Amazon compatibility test.
ptsenter: I don't know much about the devmapper, but can we use the one in Dingo somehow? jclmaster/ptsenter: I'm trying to understand this. When apps are installing to sdcard, they are actually installing in /sdcard (or /mnt/sdcard), which is our internal memory. For those that have mapped /sdcard to /extsdcard, it now actually tries to write to an actual /sdcard, but it doesn't work because our PE cannot write to the encrypted file smdl2tmp1.asec in .android_secure. Is this your understanding? Gary |

I don't know the details but I've found many apps that won't install. I just assume this is due to incompatibility with the hardware and move on.
As far as amazon's compatibility test.. if you're real quick to click on "install" you can get around this. |

I think these app just don't install due to issue with smdl2tmp1 issue, but that's my opinion. I think once we can get it installed, then whether or not it runs is another issue. About the app for today not installing, I'll try what you mentioned. I thought I tried it (clicking on install before the compatibility alert box comes up) but it didn't work for me, but I wasn't really focused on that aspect of it at the time. Gary |

State of Affair with Trip Journal
Could not install on an emulator1 corresponding to PE.
Created a new emulator2 with Android 3.1 + Google. Successfully downloaded and ran. It was looking for GPS, but ran nevertheless. Pulled it from emulator2. The app doesn't require encryption - no need in devmapper - no "smdl2tmp1 issue". Successfully installed on emulator1 and ran. Successfully installed on my PE with Ermine 1.01.xxx. While running it requires Internet connection to Amazon, which I don't have at the moment. |

Trip Journal on PE + Ermine 1.01.xxx works with or without GPS, but with Internet connection.
