It's all about the books
Let's face it, the PE's strongest side is its E-INK side. The tablet side is nothing more than child's play considering that the PE lacks the power to make the LCD side more productive than calendaring and e-mailing.
SO having said that, I need books. Lots and lots of books, textbooks, magazines and newspapers - the freer the better. I am a graduate student on a low budget and I will not hesitate to acquire from 'unknown sources'. I reach out to you, fellow Entourage enthusiasts. Let's share with each other the best places to find literature for the PE/EE. If it is legitimate, please post. If it is not, please PM. Robin Hood |

Google for free ebooks you will find many sites.
http://www.archive.org/ http://www.gutenberg.org/ http://www.ccel.org/ for Christian books http://www.mobleread.com has kindle and other ereader stuff http://www.memoware.com/ That should get your mouse warmed up :-) Edit: Amazon.com, get to the kindle books, pick a genre, sort by least to max and you will find tons of free kindle books. This will take you awhile for sure. Last time I did it there were 60 plus pages when I quite. You have to set up an account and you can use a pc reader to get them, then use Calibre program to convert them to what you want or just use the kindle reader on the android side. Check this out (I got it from the MobileRead Wiki): http://inkmesh.com/
If you have Calibre take a look at the "Get Books" and "Fetch News" functions. And of course you are looking at libraries . . . |

I love Google Books and have several thousand free books in my library there. Many books have both pdf and epub versions and both work great on the eink of the Edge.

The suggestions of where to get books are wonderful. Now, if I could just make ebook readers work . . .
1. I did install Kindle from the Amazon apps store, but it doesn't communicate with my existing Kindle account. I think there is supposed to be a menu, but all I see are 3 ebooks that seem to come pre-loaded. It claims to have synced, but books I have paid for haven't loaded. 2. I have downloaded Kobo reader from the Amazon apps store, but when I try to install it, it says application not installed. No explanation, no hints of what to try. Where should I go from here? I didn't have these problems with the PE, and this machine is making me feel so stupid. Last week the browser was disconnecting m every few seconds with no warning - and this was from different locations with different wireless providers. This hasn't happened yet today, but maybe the download of Kobo is the problem. Still, I have no clue about what's going wrong. Thanks to all in advance. |

Melitabel, get coolreader for reading on the LCD side http://sourceforge.net/projects/cren...s/CoolReader3/ it accepts epub, PDF, text and several other formats.
Epub and PDF can be read on the e-ink side. Calibre installed on your PC will convert all non DRM books to either of those formats and transfer them to your PE for you. I have Kindle for win installed in windows in a VM which I use for downloading books which then get converted for use on my EE, likewise with the B&N books. As you know not all apps work with the PE or EE, sometimes an older version will work whereas a newer one won't and vice versa. At the moment I know Coolreader 3.0.45-11 works on my EE so it should work on your PE. |

Well, it looks like the Edge is dead for the afternoon. The browser has started dumping me out so fast I can't do anything (is there a way to empty the cache?).
Ivan, I got a parse error on that link so I didn't get very far. I am about to start screaming. Ptsenter, I will read your material next. I don't know that all the books I want will be in epub or pdf. Thank you both. |

Melitabel, that browser crash problem is the worst thing about the EE for me. No such issue with the PE. I have 5 or 6 different browsers loaded and they all sometimes crash. You can empty the cache for any app by going to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications and tapping on each one, then on empty cache (or whatever it's called).
You can also reboot. Good luck! |

Thanks, Filark. I emptied the cache and rebooted, and had the browser crash again immediately. This isn't occasional - once it starts happening, it doesn't stop. I am about to give up on the Edge. It's unfortunate, because I read lots of pdfs as well as books and there is so much I could do with this - but it just isn't working.
In the link posted by ptsenter, someone suggested trying an earlier version of Kobo. Many people use Kobo, so I shouldn't have to do anything too strange to load it, so I will try the older version, if I can ever get the browser to work again. I'd download another browser if I could find a link to one that I could download. Or maybe I can find one now that I have Amazon app store. All I wanted to do was read, take handwritten notes, and do a little very low-level web surfing - that didn't seem like too high a goal with the Edge. |
