Not finding Metadata
Why do I have to look for the ISBN on Amazon and inserting it manually rather than calibre finding it via the author /title name to enable download of metadata?

I'm assuming "copied from the boxes in order" means that you have your author field set to LN, FN and your author_sort field set to FN, LN? That might confuse the downloader. Try changing your settings so that author_sort contains LN, FN as well. (Note that I'm guessing, this may have no effect at all.)

Karen Harper I put the above in Title and author, made sure the isbn was empty and the metadata downloaded first attempt. Check your metadata download plugins (customize each) and make sure the appropriate boxes are checked. If it doesn't work click the down arrow next to preferences and restart in debug mode. After it restarts try again and when you quit calibre the log file that pops up might give yoou some insight into what is going on. Good Luck. |

Looking at your results there. For a start I would disable the Nicebooks and Douban plugins - clearly they are broken at the moment. The Goodreads plugin should give you results. You can see the reasons there why it does not. For instance a title with "(2010)" in it. An author with " - a Vampire Princess" in it etc.

I think that a lot of pople do not realize thAt giving TOO MUCH information to the search can be counter-productive. It can often cause a search to fail as not all the search terms can be matched. It all depends on how the back-end server handles terms that are not matched. Some return no results, while others give the 'best match'.
Of course the corrolary also applies - making the search terms too general can mean that too many results are returned and one has to wade through them to find the correct ones. |

Indeed. It is also web search engine specific - some of those websites the metadata downloaders hit play nicely, and others are annoyingly finnicky, like not wanting spaces between an authors initials.
There is an extra complication with the Goodreads plugin and it is something I will tweak when I do the next version. The way it works is it fires a search at Goodreads, and then takes the first search result that comes back. However the Goodreads search engine can be "overly helpful" and give you a completely different book if it did not find an exact match (this only applies to title/author searches, not ISBN ones). So I have some code which does some crude checking between the title/author of the search result it found, and that in Calibre, just to make sure you don't get data for an unrelated book back, which is worse than no data at all imho. It can be in some cases that my validation checking is a little "too" strict, and so some extra characters like "(2010)" at the end of a title might reject the Goodreads result for not matching closely enough. As itimpi says it is a very fine balance, I have tried to take a conservative approach under the belief that no data is better than wrong data. However you have to "help it a little" at times by cleaning the cruft out of your authors and titles. |

Thanks kiwidude done that, never realised that the Nicebooks was enabled. As for the 2010, I have lot of books that someone decided to add that date to the title, is there a quick way to remove this in bulk, so to speak or do I have to do it manually? Since upgrading and doing the tweaks suggested here it is working much better, in fact that I have had since I installed the program.

Go back to basics. Disable Nicebooks and Douban plugins. Ensure Googlebooks and ISBNdb are enabled along with Amazon and Goodreads. Go to isbndb.com, create an account, login, go to development area and get an access key. Customize the isbndb plugin and add the access key.
Test to see how it works. Review the log. To remove the date use the search and replace feature, start with this post to get an idea what you can do. Read the links pointed to and this regex tutorial, then ask any specific question in this forum. Good Luck. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 03-16-2011 at 08:35 PM. |
