K4 Cannot Run 'Search' Commands - Help
Hello Mobile Read peoples,
Recently acquired a Kindle 4 with firmware 4.1.4 with a view to getting it working as a Weather Station. I am trying to achieve this with the following: https://github.com/x-magic/kindle-weather-stand-alone 1. Jailbreak worked. I have successfully followed the jailbreak guide on https://www.mobileread.com/ to the point where i now have an entry reading 'You are Jailbroken' at my main Kindle screen. 2. KUAL - Instructions unclear. Search Commands not working. The next pre-requisite for the "kindle-weather-stand-alone" is KUAL, so I am attempting to follow this guide: https://kindlemodding.gitbook.io/kin...ling-kual-mrpi When i try Step 5: "eject/disconnect your Kindle, then enter ;log mrpi to start MRPI. " Its not clear where i enter ";log mrpi" The Search bar has 6 options for search that dont seem to be referenced in any guides I can find. I've seen references to running 'search' commands starting with ; in other guides, I'm unable to get anything to submit in my search box, it just asks where i want to search. What am I not doing right here? Thanks for any help! |

That KUAL installation guide is for newer Kindles. To install it on Kindle 4, all you have to do is copy the KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 file from the KUAL archive to your Kindle's documents folder.

Hi Spartan, thanks for the response. Thats actually really helpful to hear, its been quite frustrating trying to understand why I couldnt search!
Another pre-requisite is Python. Do you know if there is a similar K4 compatible approach to installing this? The guide also mentions "Make sure KAUL and Kindle Python are installed and fully functional" and "Open KAUL". How do i do this without the Search commands? Thanks again! |

After you place the KUAL file in the documents folder, KUAL will appear as a document on your Kindle's home screen. To open it, you just need to select it. Search commands aren't needed.
If KUAL won't open, you may need to install MKK (Mobileread Kindlet Kit). The Python download should include a README file with instructions for installing it. I believe all you need to do is place the installation file that's labeled "k4" in your Kindle's root directory and then use the "Update Your Kindle" option in the settings. |

Hi again,
Afraid I have hit a bit of a snag. Really hopeful you can help. After installation of Python, I followed the instructions (6 steps) given to get Kindle Weather Stand working: https://github.com/x-magic/kindle-weather-stand-alone I connected to Wifi and ran: Kindle Weather Stand Dependicies Checker. within KUAL. The wizard ran through successfully installing pytz as it went (usual behaviour). I then updated the .sh and .py config files to my needs (OpenWeather) per the instructions. On the final step 6, I try to open KUAL, to launch the 'Kindle Weather Stand'. KUAL now will not open. Instead I get error: "This device is not authorized as a test kindle by the developer of this item. Please contact the developer." I have tried generic advice for this error reinstalling MKK and everything else. I have done this, but still cannot get KUAL to open. Any advice would be most welcome. I feel like I'm very close to getting this working now! Thanks, |

I have now reset the kindle to factory and retraced my steps a number of times.
Testing with just the K4jailbreak and KUAL installed, I only get the error when connected to Wifi. I also get a new 'book' showing after connecting to wifi "Test Kindle Installation Result". As mentioned, the error I get when opening KUAL is: "This device is not authorized as a test kindle by the developer of this item. Please contact the developer." The error still occurs after disconnecting Wifi, so it seems that on connecting wifi, its changing something that doesnt allow KUAL to open. I get the error even when I connect to wifi, before installing the jailbreak and KUAL. Without having connected to Wifi, I can open KUAL as normal. |

Hi there, I believe i have found the solution - annoyingly I cannot get it to work but thats another matter. I'll share my findings in case it helps someone stumbling across this thread:
"This device is not authorized as a test kindle by the developer of this item. Please contact the developer." Looks like the error with KUAL was/is caused by "OTA updates" when you connect to wifi. This can be prevented by installing Helper+ through KUAL (without wifi enabled). However, i understand this may not be a permanent fix. Instead, downgrade your firmware from 4.1.4 back to 4.1.1 as apparently OTA updates arent a problem on this FW... This user had the same experience: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=352957 I'm calling this problem solved. Hopefully I get around to actually applying this fix and getting it working myself. Cheers. |
