If they're Kindle files but with no DRM, does that mean they'd work on another Mobi reader if they were renamed?

I love what O'Reilly is doing here. They support all the major file formats including ePub, no-DRM and once you buy a book, you get it in all 3 formats. They're a few steps ahead of the rest of the publishers with such commitments.

It isn't clear if the versions from Amazon for the Kindle come with DRM or not - they don't seem to be available yet. Unless the Kindle-only version is much cheaper, buying the bundle directly from O'Rielly is a better deal because you also get PDF and ePub as well as (Kindle compatible, but works anywhere) MOBI.

I just keep hoping for more publishers to ask Amazon to post stuff for the Kindle without DRM. But selling non-DRM content for the Kindle from a non-Amazon site makes a good point, too.

As to the O'Reilly news this is great! Why bother with the book from Amazon if you can get the same from O'Reily withoug the Amazon baggage? |

He does not sell them on the Kindle. I can't say for other readers. He has a nice feature set up on his web site where he matches libraries and schools with donors. So after reading his latest book on my Kindle for free I donated a hard copy of it to my local library using his web site. Pretty cool.
I now know why you would bother with the Amazon version of the O'Reilly books. They are much cheaper, almost all are $9.99, than the O'Reilly price. |

Very cool. He didn't have that set up last time I looked at his site. I'll need to check it out. I owe someone a copy of Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town.

This is indeed an excellent news.
Let's hope that now, Sony will release their updated firmware supporting Epub format. |

Great news.
Although 30 books isn't much, it's a step in the right direction and the fact they're providing several formats for the same purchase price is commendable. Be interesting to see how well the epub versions read on a smaller device compared to the not so ideal pdf format. |
