Glowlight 2013 to lose support in 2024

Just got this email from BN

Dear NOOK GlowLight Owner,

Almost 12 years have passed since Barnes & Noble introduced our eReaders and Tablets. Since then, readers like you have shown how much the Barnes & Noble digital reading experience enhances the joy of reading that we all share. During this time, technology has continued to forge ahead, and we continue our commitment to offer the best reading experience with each new device we release. It is with these advances and changes in technology that support for the NOOK GlowLight, like every good story, must come to an end.

In June 2024 we will be discontinuing all services to your NOOK GlowLight; launched in 2013. Once this has gone into effect, your device will no longer be able to log in, download purchased content, or buy new content. But rest assured — all downloaded digital content (eBooks, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks) will still be accessible on your device, as well as on bn.com, our free NOOK iOS and Android reading apps, and on any new NOOK device you purchase.

As we draw closer to this shutdown of services to your device, please be on the lookout for additional information from B&N. LEARN MORE

Thank you and Happy Reading!

I still read on my Kobo Mini, which came out the year before. The Mini has a lot of fans.

That said, Kobo doesn't support the Mini any longer, but the firmware can be upgraded manually so it both purchases and downloads despite the lack of official support.

I urge those who will be affected by this change to read a more complete description of what will happen in June 2024: https://help.barnesandnoble.com/hc/e...f-Life-Devices

If the information there is accurate, this is not going to be like the NST-UK massacre. The devices will remain fully functional except for the purchase of new content or downloading of old content not present on the device (archived). WiFi will not be the "kiss-of-death".

The people most seriously affected are those who come late to the party and purchase a used device from ebay or similar. Those devices will not be able to use the stock reader, etc., except by bypassing OOBE. In the past, with contact with B&N servers not possible, this always led to shorter battery life. There is every reason to assume this will remain true.

The alternative for such folk would be to disable the B&N system and install their reader of choice, etc.

Because it will be impossible to fully recover a registered device that runs into trouble down the line, I recommend a full backup prior to June 2024.

I wanna say that this should lead to some special custom ROMs built around KOReader and such, but eh.

Barnes and Noble is giving you a $50.00 coupon towards the purchase of the Glow light 4E. But that's off the list price, so with the current sale you save a big $10.00......
