Baring-Gould, Sabine: Red Spider. v1. 16 Dec 2021

This light romance features a strong female character, Honor Luxmore, nicknamed Red Spider for the red cloak and stockings she wears. She is a woman of determination and high morals who promised her mother on her deathbed she would take care of her younger siblings; and come hell or high water, no matter what her father, brother, uncle, or lover think, she is going to do exactly that. There is lots of Devon folklore here — superstitions about the money spinner Red Spider, the Hand of Glory, stag hunt and hare hunt, witches, murderer’s graves; and many country proverbs and witticisms.

============
The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (28 January 1834 – 2 January 1924) was an Anglican priest, antiquarian and folklorist, novelist, and eclectic scholar. One of the most prolific and popular writers of the late-Victorian period, he wrote more than 150 books and contributed countless magazine articles. His folkloric studies resulted in The Book of Were-Wolves (1865), one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy; followed by numerous volumes on other arcane subjects. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being “Onward, Christian Soldiers.”
