Thanks for the research, though I don't understand some of the terms. What is a "spammy link farm"? I googled the term DMCA which just came up with something about copyright, but as the site was only showing a single page of a book, any copyright claim (if that's what this means) seems petty.
I have no idea what a parked-domain monetisation scheme is. But I suppose the bottom line is that the site is dead. If only all kindle books had real pages, rather than locations, which seem to mean nothing, I could do this page 99 test on my ereaders. As it is, I just judge a book by its first paragraph. |

A whole page would exceed fair use. Many countries don't even have an official fair use.
Almost all the ebook sellers offer either a "look inside" online or a download, which is 10% to 20% of the title. The rights holders agree this as part of using that seller to retail. I'd guess page99 didn't even ask and returned no money to rights holders. |

I would guess that those who got their works panned on the site probably wanted it shut down. Those who got good comments were probably happy with the exposure. Somehow I don't see the latter worrying about the missed revenue from having one of their pages copied.
