PW First Kindle Jailbreak – Need Help with KUAL Setup (Paperwhite 1, EY21, 5.6.1.1)

Hello kind people,

I could really use some help with my first Kindle jailbreak attempt.
I've tried several variations on my own but haven't had much luck yet.

At first, I ran straight into the developer.keystore expiration issue, which was very frustrating until I discovered this amazing forum.
After that, I found a lot of inconsistent information about the jailbreak process for my specific model, which made things even more confusing.

The main problem right now is:
I'm unable to properly run KUAL.
I'm pretty sure I did something wrong along the way — although I was able to install it during two of my attempts, it either gave me an error message or just showed a blank page.

Before I give it another shot (seventh time’s the charm?), I figured I'd ask for help first.

This is my current status:

Kindle Paperwhite 1 (EY21) Jailbreak + KUAL Troubleshooting Log
Device Info
Model: Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen (EY21)
Firmware: 5.6.1.1 (2689890035)
Jailbreak Status: Jailbreak installed + Hotfix installed


1. Initial Setup
Powered on device, verified firmware version (5.6.1.1).

Confirmed model number from device backplate: EY21.

Factory reset.

2. Jailbreak

26) Homescreen
27) Open Menu > Settings
28) Airplane Mode > "OFF"
29) Airplane Mode > "ON"
30) Menu > Restart
31) Waiting Reboot
32) Reboot complete
33) Plug into PC
34) Copy extracted Files from Archive https://github.com/KindleModding/Win...erBreak.tar.gz to Kindle Root Directory
35) Homescreen > Shopping Cart
36) Turn Airplane Mode off
37) Connecting
38) Winterbreak Screen > Tap Screen
39) Finished installing --this only takes 1-2 seconds?
40) Homescreen > Open Menu
41) Open Menu > Settings
42) Airplane Mode "OFF"
43) Turn Airplane Mode "ON"
44) Plug into PC
45) Copy File from https://github.com/KindleModding/Hot..._universal.bin to Kindle Root Directory
46) Settings > Menu > Update Your Kindle
47) Confirm Update
48) Wait
49) Software Update
50) Software Update Complete
51) Homescreen > Tap "Run Hotfix"
52) Installing Hotfix
53) Installing Hotfix Complete

Now comes the part to install MRPI and KUAL.

Questions about MRPI:

Which MRPI installer is correct for my Paperwhite 1 on 5.6.1.1?
Should I use the one from Notmarek or from NiLuJe?

Questions about KUAL:
I can't find the thread anymore, but I remember someone said that "KUAL - For Legacy Devices" is the correct version for my model.
However, the main guide says "KUAL (Coplate) - For Kindles newer than K5."

From what I understand, my model is newer than the K5 (Kindle 5th Gen Basic).

Which KUAL version should I pick for Paperwhite 1st Gen (EY21)?

If it is "KUAL - For Legacy Devices", how exactly should I install it?
I read that the KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 file needs to be copied into the documents/ folder — is that correct?

Is there a simple, foolproof guide for installing KUAL for dummies like me?

I would really appreciate any help. I've also taken pictures of each step and will upload them if that helps.
The more detailed the instructions, the better.
