A Fire Born of Exile, by Aliette de Bodard, is described as a "standalone sci-fi romance", however based on other books I've read by de Bodard, and on feedback I received regarding an earlier de Bodard book, Fireheart Tiger, which was described as a "romantic fantasy", I'm posting it here, and will cross-post to the romance thread. In any case, it's £0.99 in the UK right now, and given that I just now noticed the posts about the Gollancz sale, probably as part of that. Oh yeah, set in de Bodard's Xuya universe.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088WF2TGJ
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/a-fire-born-of-exile

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Scattered Pearls Belt is a string of habitats under tight military rule . . . where the powerful have become all too comfortable in their positions, and their corruption. But change is coming, with the arrival of Quynh: the mysterious and enigmatic Alchemist of Streams and Hills.

To Minh, daughter of the ruling prefect of the Belt , Quynh represents a chance for escape. To Hoà, a destitute engineer, Quynh has a mysterious link to her own past . . . and holds a deeper, more sensual appeal. But Quynh has her own secret history, and a plan for the ruling class of the Belt. A plan that will tear open old wounds, shake the heavens, and may well consume her.

A beautiful exploration of the power of love, of revenge, and of the wounds of the past, this fast-paced, heart-warming space opera is set against a backdrop of corruption, power and political scheming in the far reaches of the award-winning Xuya universe.

And (for me, anyway), there's no tax.

(But I also need to be aware of the exchange rate, since I have U.S dollars.)

If anyone's after Ken Liu's The Wall of Storms (The Dandelion Dynasty #2), it's currently 99p from Kobo in the UK - 89p for VIPs.

It's another one of those irritating cases where it might have been that price for weeks but no one's noticed as Amazon haven't dropped their price and that obviously cuts out any help from eReaderIQ.

And as is often the case it's full price €7.something in Ireland (I can't travel now on Kobo), but I add to wishlist as sometimes the Irish price matchs a few days later.

Amazon is also doing games. I see the reduced price on Amazon USA and Amazon UK, if not logged in, but the full prices when logged into either account a Kindle uses. By default Ireland has to use UK store for Kindle, though you can have prices in US$ instead of UK£. The US setting used to be really USA, but now is simply the £ converted to $ and same georestrictions. Occasionally the Kobo UK or Amazon UK ebook isn't available at all in Ireland, which is very odd. The near Cartel world carve-up of "rights" for books in English always assigned Ireland and UK as one block. Even ISBNs for Ireland are only available from the UK agency.

A while back, a bunch of the books in Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series were on sale individually at various times. Now there's a collection of five of the books on sale for $3.99 in the US, which is a very nice price if you need them all. And still not bad even if you only need a couple...

The World of the Queen's Thief Collection contains:
  • The Thief
  • The Queen of Attolia
  • The King of Attolia
  • A Conspiracy of Kings
  • Thick as Thieves

USA public domain.

But I wouldn't buy this cop in the USA, as it's public domain there, and I woudn't buy it outside the USA, as I doubt that it's an authorised edition.

Swan Song by Robert McCammon is $2.99 in the US today from the usual vendors.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005T54IAY
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/swan-song-7

I'm not sure if this belongs in Sci-Fi or Horror.

Quote:
Synopsis

McCammon’s epic bestselling novel about a girl psychic struggling to survive in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust

Something flashes in nine-year-old Swan’s brain, telling her that trouble is coming. Maybe it’s her mother, fed up with her current boyfriend and ready to abandon their dismal trailer park and seek a new home. But something far worse is on the horizon. Death falls from the sky—nuclear bombs which annihilate American civilization. Though Swan survives the blast, this young psychic’s war is just beginning.

As the survivors try to make new lives in the wasteland, an evil army forms, intent on murdering all those tainted with the diseases brought by fallout. When Swan finds a mysterious amulet that could hold the key to humankind’s salvation, she draws the attention of a man more dangerous than any nuclear bomb. To rescue mankind, this little girl will have to grow up fast.

I'm really not a Brooks fan but when it popped up in my email I felt it likely someone would want it. I agree it was a LOTR ripoff and never got beyond the first two or three myself... and that was long, long ago.

The only Brooks books I read were the first few Magic Kingdom for Sale: Sold! I enjoyed those. Never felt like branching out though.
