The Joys of AI
Ran into this item on MSN. Evidently Microsoft did an AI written travel guide which referred to the Ottawa Food Bank as the #3 must see attraction in Ottawa complete with an totally sensitive “Consider going into it on an empty stomach.”

Ouch.
Even worse: There are apparently AI written books about mushroom foraging (ie. how to recognize mushrooms which are safe to eat). Those can kill people. |

It was quite readable. There were some clear errors, but for the most part it did the job quite well. I may be less happy when I read the original version, which is now available on Amazon. |

How do you know that the translation didn't use a "pirated" copy?
The Calibre "Translate book" plug-in is problem. I'd never install it. |

The program submits the pages to the translation engine of your choice (Google translate by default). It even permits you to send to professional engines if you have a subscription. If you haul out your tinfoil hat and install it, you can choose the engine you prefer in "Settings". |

You know how Google Translate works? Same material in different languages to build a giant Rosetta stone. The "pirated" is in inverted commas. They are the biggest legal "pirates" of books on the planet and won a court case on scanning copyright works without licence by a technicality.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Books This is kind and doesn't mention the other ways that Google gets texts. Google is the worst choice for that plugin. I'm happy to use online free for a phrase or two, but I'd prefer to pay a human for a translation. So while The Golem is free in German, I bought a decent English translation. I don't go for conspiracy theories, but there is a reason why Google tools are "free". This is offered free to websites and it's abusive and privacy busting. It's a valuable resource for Google. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReCAPTCHA AI is ultimately a lie. It's databases scraped from human content for free. ChatGPT is more a toy than any use for search.
Actually it's useless as a search tool: https://www.theguardian.com/books/20...e-elif-batuman Download the books(s) and use Calibre's Full Text Search. Last edited by Quoth; 09-05-2023 at 08:01 AM. |
