Kobo WiFi not detected.

I have a Kobo model N647 that Calibre isn't detecting as a device it can send books to. It's plugged into USB and is in manage library mode. It's updated to the final firmware for this model. I don't have an SD card in it, I want to remove books from internal storage and put others in it.

Here's the debug info.

The last line says there is a Kobo but no storage found.
Did you follow those instructions?

BTW If you have not done so, First download the Patched version (no notice to those at same main level) 16.14.1

Windows 10 isn't showing any storage in it in Explorer. So I went to disk management and formatted it.

That was not a good idea. Now I need the firmware file and instructions for fixing it. I already found a video on how to open it up to remove the internal micro SD.

Patched version of what? Calibre?

I used Win32DiskImager (because the recommended USB Duplicator Image Writer would not see the SD card I used) to write the firmware image to a 2 gig SD card. Popped it into the Kobo's slot and turned it on.

After waiting quite a long time it booted and said it was updating the software. Once that was done I turned it off, popped the card out and turned it back on again.

Another loooong wait and it was running again off the internal card.

Now the 1gig partition is visible to Explorer but *not seen as formatted*. Seen by Calibre but not as a reader device. Still errors despite the device working fine in every way except for playing nicely with my computer.

Next experiment. Use Explorer (instead of disk management) to format the 1gig partition. Still not seen by Calibre.

Safely remove, unplug, power off, then on... after quite a long wait it's Updating the software on your eReader...

Done with that. Plug into USB, go to manage. Drive is inaccessible, parameter is incorrect.

I wonder if it might be some oddity with USB drivers? I'm having a similar issue with a Garmin Nuvi 1300 GPS where it's supposed to have an internal partition visible to Windows Explorer AND whatever card is in the SD slot, but neither is visible. The internal shows as Unallocated in disk management.

Trying to get the debug info again but the Kobo is taking the same super long time to start up every time. Damaged micro SD?

BUT every other USB thing I have, including other GPS receivers, and my Android phone do not have this problem.

It seems you are doing things differently from the majority of users and as the devices were delivered. (Not to say, some of my stuff still resembles what was shipped. I start with Vanilla. )

Not saying you are doing wrong, but to expect much help from those that do not have your special configuration, is a bit optimistic.

Did you look at the Calibre download page? there is a dot 1 version (a patched of the release that caused a few systems issues)

My recommendation is to use a new SD card when writing the image. I've had quite a few reports which seem to suggest that a common cause of problems is the SD card is failing. Given the cost of a new SD card, it makes more sense to try a new SD card than to write the image to the old card and then try to troubleshoot.

I'm going to get a new card for it. Not one of the fancy fast class 10 ones due to various reports I've found by people upgrading their old Kobos only to discover that many of the super fast cards are slower at smaller transfers. Class 4 seems to be the sweet spot, especially since the readers can't take advantage of the faster cards higher speed in any way.
