Could the slimming process have fucked around with maybe some kind of hard-coded size (idk, something along the lines of "boot partition should be X big so at value Y you will always find the recovery" or something?) |

you should only grow partition 3 although it's also possible to grow partition 1 (to the right only) moving partition 2 but if you touch partition 2, factory reset will stop working Last edited by frostschutz; 01-22-2023 at 02:39 PM. |

Expanding and shrinking do the same things to the partition. So no it did not affect the image. To note, I am also using a 32gb samsung micro sd card. For kicks here is the MD5 hash for kobo_clara_2e_sdcard_original_slim.img CF631914DBCF02EE5A3DDC963282E7DC Now I did these exact steps in my clara 2e using the provided image. I just took these pictures... First make sure the 2E is off by holding the power button for ~10s. Until the light stops flashing. Next lets make sure the target sd card is clean before trying new stuff. Open IM-Magic Partition Resizer. Connect the SD Card to the computer. Then Right Click where it says Disk 3 in my reset_sdcard.jpg example. Pick Delete all partitions. Make sure you select the correct Disk! Click Yes to confirm. Click Apply and ok to commit. Wait and ok. Now the Disk should be unallocated, empty. Let try using rufus to write the image to your card. https://rufus.ie/en/ Open rufus Select the Disk Select kobo_clara_2e_sdcard_original_slim.img Click Start Click OK Wait When done eject the drive and plug it into you 2E Now turn on your 2E Mine looked like clara2e_firstboot.jpg and took about 3mins to start. If it worked then turn it off again and try expanding the storage partition. Last edited by fritolays; 01-22-2023 at 03:20 PM. Reason: spelling... |

As it was a present it looks like it's going to be way too much work to get it replaced, so I might end up biting the bullet and buying one myself...
What annoys me is that I don't see any damage to the PCB itself, so I suspect it's purely some firmware fuckery. I don't have any hope that this might be fixable at this point, but if anyone has any ideas I'm all ears! |

I am not certain it is a firmware issue as that resides on the sd card. I can swap between 2 sd card and the 2E doesnt know the difference. The only other thing I could figure was it that it was interrupted during an update. The firmware update has some bootloader among other things that get flashed to things outside of the sd card... Maybe restore the slim image, or image your second 2E, and copy the latest firmware to the .kobo folder as well. Then try it in the device - maybe it will update and recover. |

I've tried that, no difference. But that makes me think, what version did you image? Could it matter? (For reference, mine was running the latest) |

For what it's worth, since the master copy of the device serial number and other bits and bobs live in that empty space, I would not recommend moving anything into that space.

With the clean sd card route I detailed last... Light comes on, starts to flash, screen remains black? When you moved partitions around... Light comes on, starts to flash, screen does what? I tried deleting just the KOBOeReader partition and got a different screen... Light comes on, starts to flash, black warning sign on screen. Quote:
I made the image before ever turning it on. The 2E from which I provided pictures of earlier had been updated to the latest version prior to my swapping cards. From my trials, it doesnt seem to make a difference. Last edited by fritolays; 01-23-2023 at 07:48 PM. Reason: error in direction |

Umm, yes .
https://github.com/lgeek/okreader#notes-for-developers There's a more detailed and up to date mapping of how NTX boards populate this space somewhere, but I can't quite find the link right now. EDIT: See Andi's notes: https://misc.andi.de1.cc/kobo/ Last edited by NiLuJe; 01-23-2023 at 04:42 PM. |

First: https://github.com/lgeek/okreader#notes-for-developers Their first partition starts at 15mb. Second: https://misc.andi.de1.cc/kobo/ This one took me a moment to understand just what he is saying.... Which lead me to find the list of sd card offset: Code:
SD_OFFSET_SECS_KERNEL = 2048 * 512 = 1MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_INITRD = 12288 * 512 = 6MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_INITRD2 = 8192 * 512 = 4MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_HWCFG = 1024 * 512 = 0.5MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_WAVEFORM = 14336 * 512 = 7MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_LOGO = 18432 * 512 = 9MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_LOGO2 = 34816 * 512 = 17MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_DTB = 1286 * 512 = 0.5MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_BOOTWAVEFORM = 55296 * 512 = 28MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_NTXFW = 1030 * 512 = 0.5MB SD_OFFSET_SECS_SNMAC = 1 * 512 = 0.0005MB Third: Thanks for providing some links. I've removed my image for tonight. I'll reupload it tomorrow once I've removed my serial number from it hehe. I'll also include instructions on how to set your serial number. Before anyone asks, I've tried changing the serial number and it still boots just fine, so its not being locked or anything. Just changes what shows up under Device Information. |
