Time Period Nominations & Vote • May 2018
Help us select what the MR Literary Club will read in May 2018!
This is a special Time Period month in that it is the final one in its cycle as we're down to the last remaining option. Thus, there is no need for a vote to determine a time period first. The category for this month is: Time Period Finale, 1501-1800 Nominations can be set in and published in any time period, but should be written during this time period. Detailed nominating and voting guidelines can be found here. Simply put, nominations are open for four days and each person may nominate up to two literary selections which will go automatically to the vote. Voting then opens for four days and each person votes by post, receives a number of votes equal to the number of nominations minus one and may give each nomination up to two votes. Any questions, feel free to ask. We hope that you will read the selection with the club and join in the discussion. The floor is now open! * Nominations are closed. Voting is closed. Final results-

I’ll start with Absalom and Achitophel by John Dryden. Published in 1681, it is a powerful political poem dealing with a critical battle between Charles II and the English Parliament concerning the succession to the English throne. Parliament wished to exclude the brother of Charles (later James II) in favour of the king’s illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth. The Earl of Shaftesbury was the primary supporter of the Duke.
Dryden took the side of the king and wrote this withering satire attacking Shaftesbury. It is 1031 lines long and written in brilliantly energetic heroic couplets. |

Great nominations so far. I had wanted to nominate The Adventures of Nicholas Experience (or The Adventures of Mr. Nicholas Wisdom) by Ignacy Krasicki and written in 1776, which is regarded as the first Polish novel and sounds something like a less zany Candide, as the main character travels around the world and ends up in a fictional version of Japan where he experiences a rational enlightenment. However, I couldn’t find a sample to try and with two other strong candidates and only two nominations I had to pass.
So, I nominate The Monk by Matthew Lewis and The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith. I’ll add more info about them soon. |

More info on my nominations:
The Monk was first published in 1796. It's a Gothic horror classic set in a monastery in Spain, was very popular in its day and was controversial in its dealing with Catholicism. I really liked the sample I read of it. Goodreads Quote:

I’ve looked into all of them and will be happy with any but with only four votes, I may sound like an echo in giving one each to-
