Stanza to add support for secured ePub and PDF
Starting next quarter, Stanza, the well-known e-book reading software for the iPhone, is going to support DRM-protected ePub and PDF documents.

Whatever you call it, this is very big news because previously DRM-ridden ePub was not available on any smart phone (or any portable device except the Sony readers).
Does iPhone Stanza support PDF today? Adobe's "PDF rendering technology" will presumably be the one page at a time reflow. I hope Stanza gets rid of the page boundary limitations, but perhaps there will be more full screens per "page" on the iPhone than on the PRS-505 (so the partial screen before the page break will be less of an issue). |

I just wish Stanza could be given a Mobi file and not turn it into a mess. Well, the table of contents at least.

So what happened to the "eReader format DRM for ePub" that Stanza was supposed to be getting?

More Stanza news
I spoke to Neelan Choksi of Lexcycle at the Tools of Change for Publishing conference in NYC. He tells me that they are also working on creating a Java-based version of Stanza, so it can be rolled out to more devices besides iPhones.

There's at least 3 of us, then.
Nice! I was thinking about a Sony Reader but will hope to be able to use my iPod Touch with Overdrive PDF library books. Good thing too because I just pre-ordered a K2. Will be selling off the K1 first, though. |
